Hi everyone, as the title suggests can anyone help me or give me advice on what to do to a new setup. I am trying to achieve a Sound Quality setup. I was given a pair of brand new Focal Audiom 6w midrange woofers. I was told to get a pair of focal tweeters to match the midrange woofers, and add a pair of midbass woofers to make the front stage whole only running it active. Is this a good suggestion? Would I go buy a pair of tweeters and midbass? Would you guys suggest the same thing?

What amplifier would complement your suggested setup? I heard good things about audiosystem, is it really that good? or are there better amps? What range of power would I be looking for, for that setup?

The only subwoofer I heard so far is a JL w6v2 and it is good. Aside from this sub is there other sub you would suggest to complement the setup above? I only want one sub so that I would still have some space in the trunk. And of course, what amp would you suggest for the sub?

As I am just starting in car audio, could you guys tell me what brands are available locally? I'm in Melbourne by the way. and are there online sites that sells car audio stuff? so that I would have a rough idea for the prices of the things I will be looking for.

Thanks in advance! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

that's a nice start - for free too! biggrin.gif

you are best to match it with speakers from the matching utopia series. it may be cheaper to buy the focal utopia 2-way 165W setup and ditch the supplied xover then run actively. alternatively, compare the price on buying the individual speakers, and even the 3-way passive xover to suit the lot.

for an amp, you'd want something high-end in keeping with these speakers. but 6 channels won't come cheaply; either go with a 6-channel amp or a 4-channel + 2-channel. i'd probably budget around $1200~2000 for the amp(s) if you want similar quality to the speakers.

as such, it could be worth buying the passive 3-way xovers, and just using a high quality 2-channel amp. that is, it may be cheaper this way.

i'd suggest around 75~100WRMS per channel @ 4ohm. note that the 6W is a 6ohm speaker (not sure about the midwoofer or tweeter); so if the amp's rated at 75WRMS @ 4ohm, it will be rated at 50WRMS @ 6ohm, which should be ample.

amps?
*boston acoustics GT series; maybe GT40 + GT22/24
*phoenix gold xenon series
*audison VRx series
*zapco
*tru tech

i've no idea what audiosystems are like.

plenty of excellent subs around. if you can spend $600~800:
*image dynamics IDMAX12 $849
*boston acoustics G5 $799
*digital designs DD3512
*diamond audio TDX
*alpine type-X

these are all top quality, high-end 12" subs. look at a monobloc subamp, say from the same series as your multichannel amps used up the front.

whilst based in sydney, they will post, and can arrange virtually any product. so maybe contact marty about the speakers as a start.

about the passive 3-way xover, it isn't listed in the pricelist of focal in fhrxstudios, is it possible to buy only the passive xover? and would the 6w fit in it since the 6w is 6ohms? or should I look at other brands passive xover and used it with the 6w?

I've also read in other threads that Focal Tweeters sound harsh, what other brands of tweeters can I look at as an alternate? Hopefully not too expensive.

If I'm going to mix and match the Audiom 6w with another brand of tweeter, then I might as well go and look at other brands of midbass, what brands would you suggest?

Right now with your suggestions on amps, I'm thinking of getting 2 PG Xenon 200.4 and using 6 channels of those amps for the front to run active, and the other 2 channels bridged for the sub. Is this a good plan?

So the setup I'm planning to build right now would compose of:
Headunit: Alpine 9853
Tweets: Still looking and waiting for suggestions
Midranges: Focal Audiom 6w
Midbass Still looking and waiting for suggestions
Subs: Still looking at the suggestions
Amps: PG Xenon 200.4 (this will depend on the impedance of the tweets and the midbass since the Audiom is 6ohms)
Processor: Alto Mobile 30 (for the active speakers)

Any more suggestions?

it wouldn't feature on a regular pricelist, but i'm sure you could order/buy it.

the passive xover will be designed specifically for the focal utopia speakers, including the 6ohm 6W, no probs.

the utopia tweeters are not harsh. well, depends how you define harsh and what you compare them with. you have to pay good money for quality tweeters. say $300~600 a pair.

dynaudio, boston acoustics, morel, phass, eton, rainbow, etc.

not a bad plan.

as i've previously suggested, investigate the cost of the focal utopia passive 3-way xover, midbass drivers and tweeters. this may end up being better value than buying 6 channels of amplification, let alone the extra RCAs, speakerwiring, etc.

Do you know someone I can contact for this? Any idea for the price range?

Can you state any brands for quality tweeters in that range? How about quality tweeters below that range say $100~300 what brands can I look at?

Thanks for your advice! Will try to do this since it is less expensive than running it active. smile.gif
