Wazzup guys and gals!!

I am about to build myself a box (vol=1cu.ft) and i found this
Jaybond High Density Acrylic Damping Material (white foam) from JayCar site

Lets say if i build my box exactly 1.cu.ft and i decide to stuff this material inside the box, does that mean my box isnt 1cu.ft anymore? (since this material around 5cm thick)?

Does this work similar to Dracon (watever it called tongue.gif )?? any other product should i use? or should leave it blank no need to stuff anything in the box?

any advise would be appriciated yahoo.gif

Cheers

It appears to be the same as dacron.

People have differing opinions on this, but i've tried with and without dacron in the same sub box with the same sub and couldn't notice a difference. So I don't believe it does anything, yet I still put it in there because it can't hurt smile.gif

Hello my1.8tm!

To give a little clarity about Dacron, there are a couple of main theories about the functionality of the material in our field of audio. You will find that almost all high end speaker manufacturers will line thier boxes with Dacron for one of two, if not both reasons. The first reason is Dacron's natural tendency as a sound absorption material. Its rate of absorption (which aids resonant waves, standing or otherwise) acts as a secondary filter to the enclosure's Fs and provides further bass resonance damping. The second school of reason is the theory of simulated increased airspace (read cubic feet) within the enclosure. Dacron, due to its inherent nature of trapping air particles within its layers, creates a volume larger than it actually is. However, used this way (stuffing) has also produced volatile arguments about how becasue the waves are no longer consistent within its environment, will create a loss of precision (mostly within a sealed enclosure) and therefore, the argument is that it must be used sparingly.

Personally I have indeed found a difference with and without dacron and I msut say that I will always line a sub box with it. I find that its resonance damping qualities alone well promotes the use of the material...

Whereas the other school of thought says if your sub-box resonates, its not bloody strong enough in the first place. tongue.gif

As stated, dacron and associated materials are a bit of a band-aid, but its cheap, and cant *hurt* to use. So why not?
