just a quick road rules question for a friend - if you get caught driving an unregistered vehicle in nsw do you lose points or just get a fine?

i know you don't in canberra, cause my dad didn't when driving his torana around unregestered, but it was like $400 for the unregistered vechicle, and another $400 for no insurance

You'll get a fine for sure. It's possible they could take points, but I'm not 100% on that one
They'll charge you separately for no rego and no insurance as usedbodychocolate said. And then if they want they could try to throw in something else to like neg driving if they follow you around and wait for you to do something wrong.
It's not a good idea

No points,
but,
~$400 fine for driving uninsured
~$400 fine for driving unregistered
~$400 fine for something else, i can't remember what, a girl at work got done the other day for it....
Just remember, if you are driving unregistered that you are uninsured no matter what sort of accident you have, i.e. comprehensive won't cover you

I know from prior experience that in Canberra, you don't lose points, you do however receive almost $500 fine for unregistered, almost $500 fine for uninsured, and almost $500 fine for unlicenced. I would imagine that it is much the same situation in NSW. Cheers
