pretty much. you can get creative, using sculpting foam for complex shapes.
also, fibreglass resin LOVES mdf. Its easy as to mount a sub to a mdf coutout, and just glass straight onto the mdf cutout. It'll be very secure.

Just make sure you buy a decent respirator mask (I think that's what they're called) for when you're applying resin and cutting/sanding hardened fibreglass. Don't just use a paper mouth/nose mask, a respirator will protect you much much more.

another question guys, if i need to make a base out of fibreglass due to complex curve, what is the best way to mount mdf off cuts to position speaker ring? like you would use wood glue between mdf base and mdf off cuts, would you use resin or something else?

hot glue gun and dowel (skinny wooden cylinder like the thickness of a pencil.) position wherever you want the ring and measure the length to the base. cut the dowel the appropriate length and hot glue it to the base and to the ring. it should hold the ring up in the air wherever you want it. stretch the material over it when your finished and glue it to the base and start glassing
