basically, yes.
But you'd have to install the app first
which at tafe may or may not be possible

What you want is a program called sockscap, some info can be found here

you can use it, but you wont be getting that sort of bandwidth. the tunnel is ran through another connection at the other end, and most of those "free" (ad ridden) tunneling programs have servers which limit bandwidth to rediculous speeds, and have incredible lag.
if you can run your own httptunnel server on a machine somewhere with a real connection to the internet (home?) youll be much better off, and can forward traffic through that point.

How'd they know what you were tunnelling? Most places of employment/education it's illegal for IT people to inspect content of packets however they can look at headers. (privacy laws etc - otherwise it'd be perfectly allowable for them to sit there and trap all your email and read it!). In short they couldn't have know you were tunneling without looking at the content of packets unless you were using a well known tunneling service (in which case you're just silly )
Maybe they should've be the ones getting in trouble

Stik - AFIAK you can read headers as you said, and the headers say 'kazzalite' or whatever for the program, that is how you block them.
The reason I am doing this is for at home, I am setting up a network, and I am playing with all this kind of thing, and finding loop holes etc etc then trying to block it.
As for doing this and getting in trouble, if you are at work, don't do it, it isnt worth your job.
And the privacy laws...I guess that depends on the contract you sign, I work in a school and next year all students will have to sign a contract stating that they will do this and not do that, and if they dont/do then they will be removed from the AD, and not be able to use any putas. It will also have a clause that any information they choose to save will be available to all staff members. If they choose not to sign it, then they wont get access to the computers. Their choice.
It's not that unreasonable to ask students to use the network for school work only. They can go to the library or net cafe or home to get their porn and warez.
The thing that craps me is, ATM I dont stop them (altho many sites are blocked), i just ask them to use common sense and not store all the data onto our servers..but they do, so it gets deleted.
