WTF? Are we all bored tonight or something? tongue.gif
Stone
Doesn't anyone else have a "borrowed" version of Windows XP and auto updates turned on???
brady123
Updates arent on no? What is the star for? To tell you that you maybe might have accidentally installed a not-so-legal version?
ReMiX
I know for sure I have an "trial" copy of Windoze XP Pro and i have no star! I feel ripped off!

All the machines i have here did an auto update and reboot mid last week .. and none of them have stars! sad.gif
Stone
A Windows autoupdate was installed on my PC called "Windows Genuine Advantage"... It puts that star on my task bar and pops up with a warning every now and then to remind me that I haven't got a legit copy of Windows YET.

brady123
Did it only just start happening to you Stone? Because I know its been in the pipeline for AGES.
Stone
It was only distributed on the 24th or 25th of April, see on OCAU.
brady123
Man I havent been there for yonks. You geek. tongue.gif
Midol
I never apply updates, if someone hacks into our network there are more interesting things here than the crap on my laptop.
~Sparkles~
i had one then it dissapeared - but my copy is legit - kind of at $40usd for an oem copy wink.gif
Stone
When you click "Purchase a genuine license", it takes you to a page that wants to charge $238USD... Isn't that a little excessive compared to AU prices?

Anyway, fixed the problem, no more little star smile.gif
~Sparkles~
i thinkso
in stores OEM versions are roughly $250ish MSY is $205 for pro atm and i think about $130ish for home all you need to do to be eligable for an OEM is to buy a stick of ram - and every one wants more ram
Stone
Do you know the difference between Home, Pro, Corporate, etc?
~Sparkles~
not really I used to have a "borrowed" copy of XP home for "testing" but i bought XP Pro it seems to have a few features that home didnt have nothing i couldnt live with out at home - in an office situation then yeah i would definately go PRO but at home on a peer to peer network then home should be fine. as for corporate i thought that was only for the windows server edition

mad_bison

stazed
And yet I have legitimate copies on all my PC's so I don't know what you're all talking about tongue.gif
nemesis
don'twe all love firewalls tongue.gif
Stone
Firewalls didn't stop Microsoft updates as I wanted the updates smile.gif I shouldn't have had auto-update on though.
mad_bison
^^roll back a few days...and then just go to windows update and disable that update from downloading.

if you can't get to windows update caus it says your copy isn't genuine, pm me
Stone
Already fixed the problem smile.gif

I don't have System Restore turned on because it annoyed me, so I couldn't roll back.
mad89
Stone can u PM me how u got round this? just out of curiosity?

thanks smile.gif

Midol
I have a genuine copy of home, but I wanted pro.

Pro upgrade (all you usually need is a CD from 98/2000/Me/Home) is only $99 from hardly normal or dickies.....
