Doesn't anyone else have a "borrowed" version of Windows XP and auto updates turned on???

Updates arent on no? What is the star for? To tell you that you maybe might have accidentally installed a not-so-legal version?

I know for sure I have an "trial" copy of Windoze XP Pro and i have no star! I feel ripped off!

All the machines i have here did an auto update and reboot mid last week .. and none of them have stars!

A Windows autoupdate was installed on my PC called "Windows Genuine Advantage"... It puts that star on my task bar and pops up with a warning every now and then to remind me that I haven't got a legit copy of Windows YET.

I never apply updates, if someone hacks into our network there are more interesting things here than the crap on my laptop.

i had one then it dissapeared - but my copy is legit - kind of at $40usd for an oem copy

When you click "Purchase a genuine license", it takes you to a page that wants to charge $238USD... Isn't that a little excessive compared to AU prices?

in stores OEM versions are roughly $250ish MSY is $205 for pro atm and i think about $130ish for home all you need to do to be eligable for an OEM is to buy a stick of ram - and every one wants more ram

Do you know the difference between Home, Pro, Corporate, etc?

not really I used to have a "borrowed" copy of XP home for "testing" but i bought XP Pro it seems to have a few features that home didnt have nothing i couldnt live with out at home - in an office situation then yeah i would definately go PRO but at home on a peer to peer network then home should be fine. as for corporate i thought that was only for the windows server edition

mm i saw that update, and thought to myself...no, i am not doing that.......bad computer....im running a borrowed pro

mine updated automatically.

so i rolled back..and then disabled that update from ever installing itself

And yet I have legitimate copies on all my PC's so I don't know what you're all talking about

Firewalls didn't stop Microsoft updates as I wanted the updates I shouldn't have had auto-update on though.

^^roll back a few days...and then just go to windows update and disable that update from downloading.

I don't have System Restore turned on because it annoyed me, so I couldn't roll back.

I have a genuine copy of home, but I wanted pro.

Pro upgrade (all you usually need is a CD from 98/2000/Me/Home) is only $99 from hardly normal or dickies.....
