i was quoted [in bendigo] that to rewind was to cost me $80 then to get a full rebuild and wind would cost me 140-150. this was for a boshe 45amp alt.
he said a rewinding would give me about 83amp. it isnt just double because it depends on what sort of alt it is.

about 10 years ago, I paid $180 to get a Bosch rewound from 80 to 120Amp, and upped from 13.8 to 14.4volt.
I'd think it's about the same nowadays..
That was a place in Boronia, but any 'good' autoelec should be able to do it

upping the voltage is usually quite simple though. simply replace the voltage regulator. can only up the volts as high as the alt can handle/put out. after 14.4 its your own risk of blowing things...
an adjustable one can be had for $20-30 [only been told about the price never looked into it myself] so you can up or down the voltage with a screwdriver [like gains on the amp].
jaycar next to auto barn told me about them.

yer we can do that. i just have to install them
i havent got a source unit at the moment and i have to wait till i get the alternator fixed (its putting out about 16.7-17 volts) and i have to get the fuel tank fixed coz the boot keeps filling with fumes
then i'll be able to get the babies in and tuned

If I might suggest..
I think petrol fumes in your boot is a much more serious problem. Me, I'd be getting that seen to ASAP.
And yes, I am a master of the bloody obvious ;-)

it only fills with fumes when the fuel tank is full. so i've only been half filling it.

ok, well its obviously @ the filler cap end of the tank because the fuel tank was replaced. so the fumes exhaust out the top of the filler cap, which is a fair distance away from the exhaust. probably just as safe to have it venting from there than where the breather normally vents to (which i dont know where it is)
