hey can you guys please advise me on retreads, a year ago i fitted 4 perelli tyres ($150 each) on my car and they have worn out in about 25 000kms, the bloke at the tyre to try retreads $70buks each, he said the taxis recon they get 60 000kms out of the tyres and that they are unable to tell the differnece between them and normal tyres. Are they as smooth, do they last as long..... thanks..

I'd never get re-treads. If they de-laminate at speed you'll be a lot worse off compared to a truck that can live with one wheel out of twenty de-laminating.
remember that the small patch of rubber that is touching the ground is all you have to stop a car in an emergency.

why gamble with your safety and braking ability?

Some people swear by them but i reckon it was horrible when i had them on my car. It felt like the car was out of control at anything above 70kms but then again i may have just had sh*t ones.
I'd never get them again though.

ahahah all those bits of rubber u see on the roads... thats from retreads

on a car, if u loose a tyre, your rooted if your traveling at a decent speed
on a semi (where most of the tyres come from) you have 18+ tyres... if any tyre blows your pretty much not going to be in any great danger (assuming its not the front 2 which is why they do not re-tread them normally)
there is a reason why they are cheaper - better off spending more and keeping not only your safety, but your passengers and other road users safety in mind

25000 isn't that bad from $600. I'd be happy with that, after all, good rubber can be a life saver when you least expect it.
I used to have crap-moderately cheap tyres on my old car, but after trying out good tyres, I'll never go back to something that isn't "good".

They tell you not to go over a certain speed with them, 100 I think ? There's a reason for that.. they suck. Spend the money to get new bags, or here's my tip on buying cheapo rubber. Ex-cop car 2nd hand rubbers, you can get 90% tread for $40 a corner ! Any tyre shop that work on police cars should be able to help you out.

i'd be happy with your cost per km rate, hey i bet they drove great!
I bought a corolla('82 model) a few years back, it was a $500 special and put 3 retreads on it to pass a RW with the intent on changing them as soon as i could afford, well i got lazy and didn't change them. They drove like crap, even after balancing them 3 times i think, and decided to de laminate one day on my way home at 80kph, what can i say a 180 degree spin on a two lane road in peak hour! Needless to say 4 new tyres the following day.

Never gamble with your safety mate. Once i forgot to rotate my 265/30 tyres and it was gone just under 6 months. It was annoying to fork out unnecesary cost when it could be avoided. But when it comes to safety, never think twice.

yeh i agree... dont skimp on your safety...
it pisses me off when people ask for/want cheap tyres...
like other people who skimp and buy cheap sh!t brake pads... im like FFS buy some decent ones. the darn things keep you safe and will save ur life if things go sour on the road...
tyres and brakes are 2 things u dont skimp on, then again u shouldnt skimp at all on the car.

engine oil
brake fluid
brake pads
drum brake pads
tyres
coolant
water bottle (for the pissers, dont laugh, they help you see!!!)
wiper blades (same reason as above)
plus many many more...
people skimp on crap like that all the time, but its what keeps ur car running and you safe...
spend big i say!!! (within reason)

my 2 cents
cheers
