Alright this is the deal
My girlfriend is whining that she cant play NFS underground with her onboard graphics chip. so im donating mine to her (MX440) because i feel that it starts to get a bit unhappy when i start cranking the display options and running at a decent resolution.
Bear in mind that im only running a 2ghz celeron with 512mb of ram, i havnt got a mind blowing computer HOWEVER i will be upgrading to the fastest P4 I can buy in about Feb 04. so it'll probly be around 3ghz+
im running a 17" Samsung Syncmaster (if that makes a diff)
Pretty much do mostly net stuff but with some games. normally simulation type games (NFS, GTA Vice City, stuff like that)
Max budget is $200.00 however if i can get away with something between $100 and $150 it will be great because it will mean I can eat this fortnight *lol*
So please, suggestions would be great
also where in Perth will give me the best prices atm? I used to use PLE but they seem to be a bit high in price these days.

An brand name FX 5200 128mb card, or a no-name FX5600 128mb card. both under $200.
5600 is a lot better card, and imho, the 5200 wouldn't really be a big step up from the mx440....
radeon do some good cards in that range, but I do'nt know current pricing.

a 5600pro or XT would be good, I think they are around $250 ATM

Bah just buy a 4200 or something - the 5x00 cards are just DX9 compatible cards that suck at doing DX9 things. May as well save your money and buy the older generation 4200 which does DX8 better than the newer generation anyway!

Dont get a 5200 they are slower than gf 4 mx's and not DX-9.
Hunt down an old radeon 9000 pro or a new 9200 pro or a second hand TI-4200 is the only thing in your league I would consider.

Radeon 9600 pro 128meg version can be had for $225 save that little bit extra and buy one of those, you wont regret it. In essence there pretty much a radeon 9700pro, plus when you upgrade to that P4 it will be nicely matched.
Oh and as for places that have them, check out game dude and computer alliance or just try and buy one local to you for those sort of dollars.

and i took ur advice
Just picked up my 9600 PRO, only paid $189.00 for it
Very happy with it so far, it will do maxed everything on 800 x 600 with ease
doesnt handle the higher resolutions overly well without lowering detail in game but i think that may be processor anyway

where did you pick one up for $189??? I'm actually buying myself one of these for xmas
Overclock that cpu of yours and see if its holding you back, you should be able to do 1024x768 with ease, unless you have all the AA/FSAA things maxed up.

I've seen the non pro's for $180ish and the pro's for $230ish give or take depending on where you shop.
You should be able to crank a little more speed out of your card with a little overclocking, might make a bit difference for you.

The 5200 is a MX for the 5000 range keep away.
Unless your going to get a decent card its not worth getting a cheap card just to save afew $$. Thou not everyone can afford the latest wiz bang, $300 should be a min u should spend for a decent card.
Drevil has either the MX440 or 5200 card and I got a 9700pro and we did a printscreen yesterday of a Underground car in pearl paint, his was just purple, my car was a proper 2 colour pearl haha.
For Nvidia min 5600
For Radeon min 9600
If your waiting for doom3 and halflife2 then Radeon is the better card haha

no it is the PRO version, they had made a mistake when ticketing it, he scanned it in and told me it wasnt the right price and that it was scanning for some rediculous amount. but cus it was ticketed like that they have to sell it to u for the ticketed price so i held him to it ;D

hey NUMB, check your clock settings, just to make sure
it could also be a LITE or SE version of the pro
models for the Radeon 9600 series are:
9600 = 325/200
9600 Pro Lite = 400/200
9600 Pro = 400/300
(just double the memory figures)
