Gday, need new tyres for my car. I currently have 245x45x17 on them. I would like to get at least 45, but if possible even taller tyres, since i am mainly interested in good ride quality.
I want to spend about $300/tyre, any recomendations would be great, thanks.

are you looking for a performance tyre or just ride quality tyre? 245's sound like its on some sort of sports car. My best tyres I've had are michellin pilot sports, theyre just a bit over $300 but well worth it. these were 255/45/r17's btw.

Tyres tend to be a trade off between performance and comfort.
Although, $300 a tyre is a DAMN good budget.
Things like michelin pilot sports are more performance orientated, i believe, and hence have a fairly soft compound, with stiff sidewalls. This equals awesome grip, but low tyre life (if you drive it properly hehe) and lower comfort.
For a "comfort" ride, look for flexible sidewalls, and plenty of tread.
Also consider that no matter what tyre you get, you can gain a lot of comfort by running comparatively low tyre pressures. This may however be at the expense of a faster wear rate.
Sorry i cant help you out more, $300 a tyre is a bit above any budget i've looked at recently

falken 451's are between 300-340 i believe.
heaps of grip..should give you fairly good ride quality too.
best to go into a tyre shop and ask them..they'll have a much better understanding of it than most of us.

Cheers for the advice guys, much appreciated.
I am definately looking for a comfort tyre. They are for a BMW 7 series, so already by having such wide big wheels, i am worsening the ride quality significantly, so i hope to offset the harshness of the rim size by a comfortable tyre.
I am surprised that you say $300 is a good budget for a tyre of this size, because last time i changed the rears i was low on cash so had to get crappy Sumitomo tyres, but they still cost me $250 each, and that was mates rates. The tyre change before that, I was loaded at the time and bought Continental Sport Contacts, They cost $500 EACH!!
So yeah if i can get a tyres that are not too crap for $300 ea I would be very happy. I will have a look into the Falkens and the Pilots.
My mate recomended Pirelli, said they would be a good budget tyre, what are your views on this brand?
Thanks for any advice, it is much appreciated.

I have the Pirelli P6000 in 235/45/17 iirc, which is their budget performance/OE model, and its not the greatest. Grips OK, bit noisy and could be more comfortable. Rated to 300km/h though

Thanks for the replies,
I am still unsure of what to go for as unfortunately no one here has had experience with a confort tyre of these specs,
Can someone recomend me a good tyre store in Melbourne? I know that if i just go to Baurepairs or Bob jane, they will just try to sell me whatever crap they have in stock, and will be unlikely to give me an honest opinion, since most tyre stores will only carry mayb 2 types of this tyre

surely u can get continentals for less than $400 or in ur price range? my dad got his for $400 each 17inch 245's and that was from mercedes, obviously they woulda jacked it up.
as for tyre place, first do the research and decide what u want

i go to traction tyres in rowville though for all my suspension work.

well ive got 17x7.5 csa edge's with 235/45/17's and the tyre i would recommend getting is what im getting when these tyres go,
and that is a Bridgestone Firestone for roughly 175-180 pr tyre for the price you can not beat them and they last for ages and still give you really good grip
im more than sure the firestone come in 245's go to a bridgestone tyre centre and find out

Yokohama Advan V103s.. best value for money tyre available at the moment. My mate has these on his 350Z and loves them to death.. nice soft ride, no road noise, excellent dry/wet grip. I'll be replacing my Bridgestone S02s (were $480 a tyre!) with a set of these in the next few weeks - approx $320ea for 235/45/17s.
