Hi peoples after much reading and discussion I am really having trouble deciding what subwoofer setup to go with.
Previously I have used a 12" Alpine Type R sub with good success.
The system I will be using is as follows:
Headunit Alpine IVA-310E
Equaliser Alpine MDA-5458
Front Stage Dynaudio System 340
Front Amp Alpine MRV-F540
Sub Amps Alpine MRD-M1001 x 2
Now I was planning to use 2 x 10" subwoofers for my primarly SQ system. I have listened to many setups and have really found it hard to decide what is going to sound the best.
I listen to a wide variety of music and like the bottom end extension of a 12" driver but am enthralled at the punchiness of 2 x 10" drivers.
Obviously the 2 sub amps are capable of 1000WRMS each so they should be powered sufficently.
So ported, sealed, bandpass hmmmm so many decisions, the car is a 2005 Toyota Corolla hatchback so if anyone has any input or ideas would be great.
Current Ideas are:
2 x 10" Alpine Type X
2 x 10" DD 2510D
2 x 10" IDMAX
2 x 10" JL Audio unsure of model but i think its the W7 series

IDMAX or possible Oz Audio Matrix, Rainbow Amboss

i got a single 12in OZ matrix and it is punchy as all hell (way more than my boston pro 10.5 was) and play's as low as you want.
and off only 500wrms rock's the crapper out of my car. (and blends in nicely with my 6.5in mids)

The Adelaide Pro Sound demo car will feature two of the OZ Audio Matrix series woofers.
I had the pleasure to listen to the difference between the OZ and the Rainbow Amboss, in a sealed and ported environment and basically the conclusion is they are both beautiful sounding woofers.
The Amboss is slightly more efficient in the boxes we used, they both play nice and loud and TIGHT but i have to say the Amboss was my pick, personally due to the fact that it played every note very accurately. They both played very low because we had the LPF on 50hz at one stage and both woofers still rocked the car and it is a big VRX Magna which has been fully deadened.
I did a EVO 9 and a Toyota Celica with a 2512 and i must say, even though people talk about DD mainly being targeted towards the SPL scene, now that i have had a chance to play with them i can say they can play just as accurately as the woofers above, the only downfall is they dont really like a sealed box, so if box size is a problem then perhaps this is not the driver to be looking towards.
Anyway once i install the Matrix splits and woofers which should be done by the end of next week, i will have a better opinion on the OZ Audio woofers, in a pure SQ environment.

Thanks George for your input its always such a terrible decision when u can have access to soo many good drivers. Its interesting to note that you rate the DD subs as accurate in the SQ department as at the moment Ive only heard them in a car setup for SPL, however one could argue with my 2 x MRD-M1001's for the subs I am giving them SPL power.
Ive always been under the impression that u cant have too much power for the dynamics in music so thats been the way I looked at the system. I did forget to mention before that the car has been extensively sound deadened with 2 x Dynamat Bulk kits been used.
As for your mentioned woofers of OZ audio + Rainbow I havent heard them yet so hopefully I can hear some at the next CAA event next weekend

not to hijack the thread but on the case of rainbow subs, has anyone listened to the profi and the vanadium subs?
i've listened to many of rainbow splits but never had the opportunity to listen to their subs

Yes i have a Vanadium in the shop which we gave a good test and listening to on our Mitsubishi club meet day. Absolutely beautiful woofers.
I am not trying to be biased Stimulate. I dont comment on a product unless i have used it. The DD's did play accurately and i have a good result with the product after a properly built and designed subbox.
Up untill a few months ago the only experience i had was DD in SPL format, but since the shop opened i have utilised them in some awesome sounding systems.
Like i said they need to be in good boxes.

can someone post me a pic of some of these subs
APS

Here you go.
First pic is the Rainbow Hammer. Second is also the hammer compared to the ME.
The others are the ME and the Vanadium.
Difference between Hammer and Vanadium, well the charaterstics are similar, very precise accurate woofers. They dont accentuate the bass note, they only play the information that is given to them. They are very very efficient and dont require a lot of power to get loud. Very natural sounding.
The Vanadium just does it slightly better than the Amboss.

the oz looks like a idmax v1
i can say that a sinlge jl 13w7 is just amazing but the dual 1.5ohm load wouldnt suit your amps. Ive been told that the 8w7 is of superior design to all the other w7 series. This might be a very good choice and extremely compact. The w7 series are amazing but they are not for everyone they do have a distinctive sound. Reminds me of the kicker round solobaric subs with sooo much more ouput.
i dont think you really can go wrong with any of these top brand subs. The progression in the last 10years in subs has been amazing. Power handling, linear travel, distortion reduction has increased dramatically.

The Rainbow basket might look similar but its NOT.
The Oz Audio has 8 screw holes the Rainbow has 6, also outer rim of the basket is different shape to the OZ Audio, if you have a look you will see the OZ can be mounted inverted whereas the Rainbow cant.

To me!
I can also concur that both the Amboss and the Oz Audio Matrix Elite subwoofers are excellent. I agree with George's comments as the tests were done in my car, and George, it's a Ralliart, not VRX! hehehe.
On a serious note you can't go wrong with the above subs..

...When you can install a pair of Profi Vanadium 4"s into the factory locations on a 230E Merc, and add a Hammer 10" in a decent box, and physically find it difficult to hear where the speakers transition to the sub, without any EQ or processing at all, and you know its some very nice gear indeed....
Either that or the Sub sounds like a 4"
That sub looks like the s.e.x. in a can! I havent finished my current setup, and I already know what Im upgrading to for the next round!!
