Who'd be silly enough to get telstra broadband its an absolute rip off not to mention having to wait a week for emails at home I have broadband from a local provider for $75 a month and I live in Cairns which is classed as a remote area for broadband completely unlimited downloads/uploads no slow down in speeds and reliable.

I have it and it's damn reliable. Never had problems.
Already upgraded to the new plan Only starts next month though.

They still count uploads in the limit though dont they?
Wouldnt surprise me if in a few months time they are back to 3gb plans after locking in a bunch of new customers to 18month - 2 year contracts

ive seen a couple of unlimited adsl plans for cheap
but what are the cons?
i heard they get congested, and drop out alot?

oh another thing, these Telstra plans are not "unlimited", they are 10gb plans with shaping. Typical of telstra to market them as unlimited, that is so misleading.
Tomee the unlimited providers on the Comindico network generally have crappy pings and congestion on the network. There are some providers that use Connect (i think), but dont know much about them. Wouldn't be surprised if they are just as bad.
Best is to check out the forums on
www.whirlpool.net.au and see what everyone's opinions are on the various ISP's

it is uncapped downstream, 128k upstream...
I just have to wait for optus to follow and give me an "unlimited" plan...
Ahhh when i first signed up to optus i had TRUE unlimited dammit!!! hahahah i didn't know how good i had it!

welcome to last millenia
last weekends "outage" was a stress test
passed with flying colours, yet even though it did, they are upgrading the network to handle even more traffic.
Dont be so suspicious of telstra. They get pounced on HARD by the media if they do anything like eliminate the plans. I think you'd find if they did eliminate it, they would allow people that are contracted to run out their contract on the current agreement.

it's still unlimited but. the speeds slow down after 10gig (sif use over 10gig anyway!) but you can still keep downloading nonstop (just slower) which makes it still umlimited
so it is unlimited dl's but not unlimited speeds

Well I did some searching on the Bigpond site last night when i got home from work. Looks like the same applies for ADSL aswell. Yay! I can finally get more then 3 gig per month from Telstra without paying $200 p/m.

matt given their track record there is every reason to be suspicious
And such plans are not true unlimited plans, and should not be labelled that way. They know exactly what they are doing labelling them UNLIMITED*, otherwise they would label the plans 10gb with shapiong like every other ISP in the country does.

may be you should read the details first before you coment it says they may slow it down after 10 gig.
..................................................
Great speed potential and the freedom to download all the data you want makes this option the ultimate broadband solution - perfect for extensive online media or game users (speed may be slowed to 64kbps after 10GB).
Poida
Dec 10 2003, 11:44 AM
Yes i know the details, the word "may" is in there so they can write UNLIMITED* elsewhere. In practice, everyone will be getting shaped after 10gb...

poid im not trying to start an arguement, but if you worked for bigpond, then you would know that there currently is no system in place to limit such usage, and it will only be implemented if people start downloading out of control/abusing the system (we all know the people who download 40gig a month).
Now i cant say anything about bigpond's track record, because techically i work for "Telstra On-Air" which is owned by telstra mobile, but please give me an example of said track record.
When telstra mobile change plans, they NEVER move people over or cancel an old offer, at least till the contract has run out, no matter how much they are losing on that customer. The only time i can remember, is something they are doing currently. They are phasing out a prepaid setup that existed 5 years ago so they are migrating people across to their current system which is
a. cheaper
b. simpler
c. less bugs
d. more widely available
etc..
Can we just say this is good news to bigpond customers, and also good news to the ADSL/Cable market as a whole.
Poida
Dec 10 2003, 01:28 PM
I dont work for bigpond, but i do know that they dont have that system fully operational yet. However if they allowed people to download more than 10gb without being shaped, wouldnt they market it as a flatrate plan, like Internode do, or a 20gb plan, etc...
I do agree though that this is a good thing for broadband. Rumour has it that the wholesale cost of adsl ports has fallen as well, if this is the case then we can all look forward to better broadband in Australia

I used to be on Telstra Cable a few years ago and it was great, 512kbps down, 128kbps up, unlimited*
*subject to acceptable use policy
But I could never get a straight answer out of them as to how many megs a day was acceptable use.
Thru trial and error I found around 500 meg a day to not trip anything off.
I'm now with Internode 1.5MBit ADSL, on their 'flatrate' plans, which are fantastic, instant customer service, no dropouts so far, my e-mail comes on time etc etc.
Did 78 gig one month and could barely notice any slowdown lol
WRXCORE
Dec 12 2003, 02:27 AM
Well this is all good news for broadband as a whole in Australia, thou Id like to see 1.5mbit ADSL to come down in price under $100 and to bring out 640 and 720kbit connections like they have in other parts in the world just to bridge the gap between 512 and 1.5mbit.

Well i guess it is a step in the right direction, however they have taken many steps back first...
I first got Optus Cable UNLIMITED (true unlimited) back in 2000. Since then my monthly fees have gone up and downloads been capped...
Shouldn't technology get progressively cheaper?

It's simply called competition!
No other company offered what optus did (uncapped download speeds and uncapped downloads), so when teltra's BB changed, so did optus, they simply changed it... I can assure you they didn't loose that many customers... because the ones that had it and needed the large downloads were happy to pay for it because of the raw speed! Now there's some challenge, i think it'll be coming down

a friend of mine has a 1.5mb unlimited download ADSL and has a network setup between him and his neighbour on either side. so they all split the cost of the bill and get to enjoy unlimted downloads and its usually pretty fast cuase not often there all on there at the same. even set up a time every day where they only surf net so that its not to slow for anyone.
lol my naighbours wernt interested
