Mobile Electronics Australia > Off Topic / Other Discussion > Tech Heads Corner

hey guys

will be getting ADSL shortly (i think Internode 512 plan, $40, 8Gb then shaped)

i wouldn't mind a wireless adsl modem, at the entry level end of the market

was thinking Billion 7300g ($120) or Linksys WAG54G ($143)

any others?

pros/cons of the above?

yes, i did run a search, but all threads were 1-2 years old, and we all know how fast technology changes!!!

thanks in advance

Personally, I have had nothing but Dramas from Billion. The 4 I have dealt with (2 x ADSL, 1 x ADSL2 and 1 x ADSL2 Wireless) all seemed to suffer from dropouts, but they had problems reconnecting after a dropout. I believe this was caused by heat. I removed the case from one and ran a fan on it, it worked very well from then on in.

I personally would recommend Zyxel Modems. I changed 2 of the Bilions for Zyxel products and haven't had any problems. I still get dropouts at my house (I am however 7.5 KM's from the exchange) but it reconnects within about 20 seconds.
If you are after a nice simple 4 port router with wireless I'd go the Zyxel 660H. Should be about $150.

I haven't had much to do with Linksys, but I have a wireless access point and it runs a treat.

Oaaah, you know adsl2+ isnt that much more expensive?
Stooge007
adsl2+ isn't at my exchange yet

worth waiting for?

internode don't charge for cancellation after 6 months.

I've got the Linksys and I can't fault it, except the antenna is fixed and can't be upgraded.

Netgear DG834G. Great piece of kit. Never ever had a problem with mine and have owned it for 3 (or maybe 2?) years. ADSL2 ready too IIRC.

hmmm.....i just got adsl recetly. I'm with aapt and they ship you a D-Link 502 modem and i needed wireless so i went out and bought a 108mg wireless router ($110) and a pci reciever for it (~$60) which were both D-Link and so far they have been working perfectly. It's only been about 3 months though
mad_bison
i can also recommend the DG834G very highly.

i run 54mb wireless to my laptop, girlfriends laptop, and my media center.. good speed..very few dropouts...

no problems that i've had.

you can also pick one up for ~$100 or so.

i've got the netgear dg834g, i get a few dropouts, but its probably my wireless network card. theres a dlink (not sure of model) which comes with the the wireless network card and the adsl2+ modem router is pretty good, set quite a few up n very good, no dropouts whats so ever.

are you sure you want wireless, i find it abit off an annoyance, unless you got more than 1 pc just use cat5 cable
brady123
Wireless is fine IF its set up properly and you arent trying to push the boundaries of how far it can go. I used to run my laptop 24-7 on wireless, had about one dropout in a year or something ridiculous like that.

Most of the tech heads at work recommend the Netgear ones. I have always used D-Link gear, but can see myself updating to Netgear very soon smile.gif

It's worth having a look on the Whirlpool forums. There should be updated information there.

For somebody who knows a little bit about what they are doing a Billion 7402 VGOP is recommended.

When I bought mine about six months ago now, it was a toss up between the Billion and the Linksys. I went Billion because Linksys(Cisco) were having problems with there firmware at the time.

It also depends on your price range, but have a look on the forums here...http://whirlpool.net.au/

I use a billion and a d-link, both seem fine.

Just a note, as now you have ADSL or are getting it, why not also try and get a modem with VoIP...

VoIP allows you to make phone calls over the internet (If you didnt know) At the moment I can call anyone all over Australia for 10c for as long as I want and at what ever time smile.gif

The only down side is that the modems are a little more expensive, but you make that money back very quickly with such cheap phone calls...

Ignore this if you want, I thought I'd tell you about it if you might of been intetested and maybe for other to read up on..

Back to the topic, I am using a Billion!

Ditto, using billion and have installed about a dozen of them, no major dramas. All dropouts etc turned out to be general installation/line faults (noise source nearby, crap line quality, etc).

And theres software that lets you do VoIP, but hardware support doesnt hurt.
obi_180
netgear, or linksys (cos its cisco)
stay the hell away from d-link :]
Stooge007
thanks people smile.gif

re: Voip, i hardly ever make local calls from my home phone, usually just use my mobile, so don't really need Voip at this stage (thanks anyway)

ok, seems like netgear or billion are the way to go.

Netgear DG834G = $115
Billion 7300G = $120

guess i'll flip a coin!

thanks again lads

Funny how people have had issues with D-link and reccommend Netgear.
I've ever only had bad experiences with Netgear and good ones with D-link... lol

The roll out of ADSL2+ is fairly big right now, only just 6 months ago there weren't many exchanges which support it and my exchange was expected to support ADSL2+ late 06 but it's available now and i'll be changing over.

I'm planning to go on a TPG $60 plan
24576/1024
30gig download quota
capped at 128/128

Beats my current bigpond cable plan
$70 a month
10gig quota which INCLUDES UPLOADS!!! nea.gif
capped at 64k

If the speed isn't an issue then there are actually a few plans which provide unlimited downloads, true unlimited and not the Bigpond "UNLIMITED" (which is only 10gigs...). A friend of mine is about to get an adssl plan which provides an unlimited quota for $50 a month but I think the connection speed is 256k, there are other plans which have higher speeds. The Plan search on whirlpool forums is unbelievably convenient.

The netgear one is great, use it here and it runs a treat.

Don't bother with the D-Link all in one, its crap. Roughly 1/3 of them get returned for repair, with constant dropouts, or simply not connecting. They have a problem, where when they warm up (10min) they screw up.

D-Link routers are ok, but leave the modem/router well alone.
Stooge007
what's the brand Diamond like?

another vote here for the Netgear DG834G

i picked one up yesterday for $105 from the local computer fair.

its great so far, and the setup was easy as.

if ur considering this one, then make sure u get the latest one, which is the 'v3'. how to tell the difference between them, the box of the v3 is white, and has a pic of the router on it standing upright, compared to the old orange box with it lying down.

i dunno the difference between all the versions, however AFAIK, the v3 is ADSL2+ compliant straight out of the box, whereas the v2 requires a firmware upgrade to get it to work with ADSL2+. dont quote me on that tho, as im not sure...

happy hunting...
