it really comes down to your ears and your hearing.

i can not listen to metal tweeters in the car for anything over 5mins at a time. Some people love metal tweeters. So its really up to what you like and can listen to for extended time periods.

go to as many shops as possible and have a listen to all the demo boards they have (with the splits in YOUR price range). Just remember that it will sound louder and more dynamic (in some cases harsh) in the car. Install and choice of tweeter material determins the sound of your set of splits in YOUR car.

i'd also recommend going to your local Jaycar and listening to their Kevlar splits. very nice budget split set, and only cost $150!

By all reports, if you get the jaycar splits ($150), then use the jaycar 6" woofers ($80 a pair) you'll get a much superior result, and still come in under the $250 mark. Bonus, you'll get a nice kevlar woofer from the splits you can simply run full-range in the back, if you wish.

I was under the impression that the Optional Kevlar woofers where $80 EACH.

all Jaycar speakers apart from the car specific ones are sold singular.. so I understand.

although I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong.

it's a hard call to say wats going to be awesome at $300
cause it's a huge marketplace at that price.

the biggest problem with speakers in that range, is there crossovers,
if you can run a active setup off a deck, you can afford to buy separate midbass like the $80 each Jaycars, and some nice tweeters, do a kick ass sealed door pod install, with lots of deadning and good dampening/design, and you'll get results that speak in the 4 figures mark in terms of sound vs value.

just buying a set of splits with passive network under $300 and expecting big results,
you got ALOT of speakers to listen to.. I can tell you.

I was very very impressed with JVC's Top end option 6.5" splits, which sell for around $250.00
these do have metal tweeters, but are still quite nice, the midbass is quite incredible at the pricepoint.
I would be tempted to look at these before a $450 set of focals. The JVC's are definatly alot better than the Jaycars, albeit fairly unknown however. I tried a set of Alpine Type S Just recently, and still prefer the JVC's although they are a tiny bit brighter. but are clearer and stronger midbass.

If you have not done a proper install in your doors,
then definatly spend $150 on Jaycars, and spend the other $150 on Deadning, Sealing and Solidifying your door and installing the midbass properly.

If you stick the Jaycars into the door just as is, they will sound like $100 speakers.
if you spend the $150 and do the doors properly, your jaycars will sound bloody awesome.. almost unvaluable. A proper Door install will make any speaker sound 10 times better than just being bolted in.
regardless of price.

I've been think of betting some of those split's for a while, I also new that jaycar sold the woofers for $80 but I didn't think of combining the two. That's an awsome idea for a budget system good.gif !!

i dont get it, isnt the 6.5 that comes with the splits kevlar aswell? what are the differences between the 6.5 that comes with the splits, and the kevlar 6 inch that is supposed to make it sound so much better? has anyone done this in there own car? what were the results, and what makes it so much better?

I have recently done this swap in my own car, and I must say it was definantly worth it.

Build quality on the kevlar 6.5 woofer is far superior to the one that comes with the set of splits, the magnet is massive in comparison and the inverted dust cap looks much better. Sitting the two together, there is a veryclear winner here! If you have already installed the splits (like I had) you might have trouble mounting the new woofer as they do not simply swap over due to the increased flange & cutout diameter. They are also slightly deeper due to the larger magnet. My splits were mounted solidly onto 18mm mdf sealed to the doors so it was just a case of filing this out in the necessary areas to accomodate the new speaker and also adding a thin 6mm mdf ring due to the mounting depth.
Listening to the difference, I was a happy man. With one speaker replaced in one of my doors and the other left with the standard 6.5" woofer I compared the sound of either door (fully sound deadened with RAAMat inside and out.. absolutely NO air leaks apart from the small 6mm holes that the door trim clips into). The one with the new woofer has an increased presence in midbass and did not distort when pushed to the same volume as the original midwoofer.

It is important to note that the single kevlar woofer has a different efficiency rating than the original woofer, so when installed in the same setup results in the tweeter's presence being felt more. Nothing that a bit of EQ can't fix though
Please remember, these are all my subjective opinions on these speakers.. if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.

Hope it helps.

Here is a poor quality (camera phone) picture of the comparison between the two woofers, as you can see the new kevlar is a solid speaker.
