Kramy
Well im looking to get a new system and just had a look in one of the papers and i really have no idea anymore on whats good and whats not. What are your thoughts on what i should get. will be used for games and the net.

around $1500 give or take a few dollars
requires network card and all the peripherals.

Thanks in advance.
Tomee
do you mean you need everything?? monitor etc?
or just the basic system?

just to give u an idea...

amd xp 2500+ $144
a7n8x-x $112
512mb pc3200 $123
9600 Pro $250
liteon 52x burner $52
80 gig WD 8mb Cache $119
450Wat PSU $40

Total so far $840
Kramy
yep meed everything apart from software as i already have what i need.

Are there any difference between amd and the p4
G-Phresh
the only diff i find between AMD and Intel is price

AMD is usually alot cheaper than Intel, and i rather AMD because the price to quality and speed ratio

id say AMD if its only a cheap system

Kramy
or should i upgrade the system i have at the moment. P4 2Ghz not sure what MB but its got onboard everything which sucks and 256mb ram i think i need a decent video card for games so it might work out better that way.
TUN35
P4 2gig is nothing too slow. Maybe if you put a little more memory in her and an AGP video card you will get what your looking for from it. If that's not enough you can always upgrade the CPU as well. But of course that depends on the current board you've got in there.

Do you have any specs on your current setup?
Marlin
Ask dasherhalo he'll sort you out
Bodyjar
Paul, i'll buy ur old one if u wanna sell

I recommend Nvidia GeForce video cards for games.... something like the 256MB FX 5600 XP bout $250-$275ish something that's directX 9 compatible which the new games require

from msy.com.au

the new lne of FX series vid cards are poo IMO
goto tomshardware.com and compare the new ATi cards with the FX line, and the ATi craps all over them
alot of people think the same
WRXCORE
Haha P4 2Ghz and u want to upgrade???!!! Just buy some more ram(512mb total) and a new ATI 9600+ card and the thing will play any game you can throw at it.

Then the money you save you can spend on car audio gear

Really no point upgrading all out just yet cause 4ghz+ pc's are just around the corner and Atlon64 will come down in price as well.
STIK79
Or is it a 2G celeron? </me shudders>
Kramy
i was jsut looking at the price of new systems and they seem to be dropping in price so thats why i was looking. and my mate wants to but a second hand system so i was going to sell him mine and get a new one.

The M/B i think is an ASUS A7A266.
Trough Lolly
kramy, keep ur 2ghz chip and upgrade to 512DDR, 9600 card or a g4Ti4200 grafix card. and a new mobo if urs is all intergrated crud.
Nav2k
and buy a clear case with some neons inside! u know u want some..
TUN35
Nah that can't be the M/B you have as that is an AMD board. If you have an Asus board your model number might be for example (as you are using an intel chip) P4V533-MX or something along those lines. But if you want to get a whole new system i reckon hold off until maybe end of Jan. Even though stuff is cheap as chips at the moment.
Kramy
that M/b may of been the previous computer that i had then. Might just upgrade the internals as everyone is saying
Winterheart
If you've got a 2ghz system now, then I'd only consider getting as a bare minimum at least 512mb of DDR ram, a 128mb GF4 Ti42004800 or 128mb Radeon 9600 Pro videocard, and you'll be cruising along. That said, double check what model cpu and motherboard you've got now, as that will affect what upgrade options you have. Just my thoughts. Cheers

My suggestion would be to drop a 9600 XT graphics card into it (you can pick these up for $230). The CPU should have plenty of power for most games/apps. Upgrading to 512 MB of RAM would be a good idea, too. Any less than that and some games wont like you very much. Doing those upgrades will cost you far less than a new system, and you will still get a system capable of handling pretty much anything you can throw at it .
Kramy
ok i have now decided to go with the upgrade.
New M/B New video card and more than likely go with a gig of ram.
TUN35
Before you go looking for a new board check out the specs of your current one and see how you can push the limits of it!! Tell you 1 thing you will notice the difference with a gb of RAM. Anything there after that isn't very noticable unless working with large files.
