Hey all,

I'm looking for a sub for my room primarily for music but also for movies and tv shows etc. I have no real restrictions except the sub must be avalible in dual 4Ohms (or 8Ohms) and obviously goes low and smooth etc. I know generally people use "home" subs but I've used a few "car" subs in the home and I know other people here have and vica versa (peerless subs in cars and shiva's etc). What have people used and would recommend? Any suggestions would be awesome smile.gif

Budget is varible, I was looking at the Peerless stuff before which is >$400 but I'm open to suggestions though I doubt thousand dollar SPL driver will be nessessary silly.gif

Cheers guys

Oh forgot to add the amps a pro amp putting out potentially 500W @ 8Ohms.

I would suggest building an isobarik Vifa or Scanspeak setup if you want true sub frequencies. What range are you looking for this sub to play?

I don't particularly go the isobarik path, I'm only look for the sub to go down smoothly to 20Hz, it'll have a rumble filter and be low passed at around 70Hz.

I used a Kicker 15" and an enclosure over 300L as a bit of an experiement. It went to 1db down at 19Hz, and would rattle the dishes off the kitchen sink. If you went outside you could hear the tiles on the roof rattling. Biggest problem was the gyprock walls vibrating against the frames - made some horrible noises...

I read an article online somewhere where where they used a 12" peerless sub in a pretty small sealed enclosure. It was supposed to be ultra fast because of the low volume.

Don't forget that room gain can be up to 12db/oct below the first standing wave, so sealed boxes can generate a very flat response down to 20hz.

Interesting reading here too: http://www.d-s-t.com.au/data/Peerless/Peer...h_subwoofer.pdf

Cheers, I've gone over all the Peerless info, espcially on the 830500 (which due to avalibility what I was initially looking at) but I recall hearing people using certain car woofers and I'd be intrested in hearing people's opinions. The only real issue with the 830500 is I just wouldn't feel happy with it unless I went the PR path...which costs more money so I've got some time and want to look at all the options. My brothers running a DD1012 in his room but its in a very high ported box (close to what DD recommends) and sure it sounds loud and punchy but not what I'm looking for.

Try having a look at planet audio, link in my sig. site run by marc dedicated to home audio.

Yeah I have a thread over there, its just that I remember users commenting over here on their use of car subs in the home as I have done and I was just wondering what drivers people have used and recommend. Getting car drivers (new or second hand) is a lot easier than getting a lot of the 'home' drivers.

Over in the US, lots of people buy SoundSplinter for home use, in fact majority of the sale went into home set up if i remember correctly. It's built by TC sounds which is a familiar playground for home sub i believe.

Any reason that it needs to be 8 ohms? Most sub amps will run at 4?
I currently run an Adire Brahma for home sub duties (Until it gets installed in the car)

Check out the 'wicked one' thread in general discussion, that's another cool little home project (2 x 4 ohm subs would suit your needs)

I use an Adire Audio - Tempest in the ported box I had in my car. It sounds good for movies, but I can't comment on music as I don't listen to music through that stereo.

Yeah, I personally think it sounds great. It's only (only.... tongue.gif ) getting 350WRMS. It's in a ported box that Roddas77 help me design, tuned to 26 Hz.
I also don't listen to music through it so wouldn't know.

Nah the amp is only stable at 8 Ohms unfortunatly. The wicked one looks cool and I've been thinking of giving it a go sometime but for now I'm going to stick with one woofer in a sealed/ported box and KISS.

I think I have the 240Wrms Jaycar amp running mine and it's in a 3.5ft3 box tuned to 26Hz.

It comes as a dual 8 ohm sub, so you'd have to run one coil (which Adire allows) or buy another amp biggrin.gif

Any other suggestions or things people are running, I think DDPhil has used a few DD's for HT use.

Open discussion tongue.gif may as well close the thread tongue.gif
