Ok this is for the brave people who were smokers and have kicked the habit.

www.silkquit.org

Download this and add in when you quit, rough time, how many smokes you have per day, how much each packet cost, and how many in a packet. It will keep you updated on how long it has been done to the hours, amount saved, how many smokes you havent smoked, and how long of your life you have saved by doing it.

I have been a non smoker since the 24/11/05, i quit at about 5am, when half way through a smoke i said "no more". Lets see how you go.

This is mine so far.

Somber Time: 6 mths, 2 weeks, 1 day, 10hrs, 13mins and 54sec
Amount Saved: $1,618.90
Cigarettes not smoked: 3928
Life saved: 1week, 6hrs, 15mins, 20 secs

And keeping strong, such a hard habit to kick.

Unfortunately I didn't record the exact time I quit, but it's been nearly 3 yrs.
Went cold turkey from a 30 per day habit.

You would have saved much more of your life than that. The rate at which your body gets healthier after you quit smoking is exponential, but it also depends on how long you WERE smoking.

so while the rest of the stats are fantastic, i think you could indeed MULTIPLY that "life saved" figure by an awful lot.
MRS.TEK
Do you know what.....i thought the same thing.

not to mention general quality of life goes waaaay up. better breathing, better brain function, etc.

look up the chemical mechanism of nicotine addiction. It involves your neurons in the brain, and is f***ing scary. Nice link. I might use it to see how many cigarettes i'd have smoked if i WAS a smoker (i'm not) lol.

Evening all.

Well its been 29 days since I quit and I am loving every minute of it.

Congrats to all who have kicked the habit.

That was there for people just to see. I believe the rest, just not the life saved part.
I had to go cold turkey, i had no other choice, im not allowed to have patches, gum or anything like that.

Hmmm pitter patter of little feet expected soon? or just doctors orders
MRS.TEK
LOL Mosoto, nothing to do with kids. I have a severe heart condition (no im not going to die) and it prevents me from that sort of stuff, cold and flu tablets to. When i get the flu etc, its panadol for me.
mosoto
Well thats a damn good reason to have to quit. I did it for myself & the kids, When I lit up my daughter would cry and say "Daddy, I dont want you to die". That got to me & I thought "thats it, no more."
I honestly dont regret it at all, my only regret is having started 20yrs ago.
MRS.TEK
Awww wow, that would have stopped me straight away to.
But then again, i started smoking two yrs after being diagnosed, pretty dumb thing to do. And what made me decide to stop at 5am, half way through a smoke, was someone else had died, who i didnt even know. But her circumstances made me decide.

Was listening to Kyle and Jackie O' on the 2DAY FM Morning Crew interviewing Jennifer Aniston last week;

Kyle showed Jen Aniston a packet of smokes with the gangrenous foot picture on it, she was completely blown away - I think Australia has one of the most aggressive anti-smoking campaigns in the developed world, but unfortunately the rates of smoking (particularly in young women) are still on the rise.

It's a terribly addictive drug, and kills FAR more people each year than alcohol and illicit drugs.

The lucky ones are the ones who drop dead suddenly from a heart attack (heart disease = no.1 killer of cigarette smokers).

The unlucky ones are the ones who die SLOWLY from emphysema, unable to even get themselves out of a chair to walk to the toilet bec they are so short of breath.

(The most horrible one is lung cancer, though).

For some people, giving up the smokes is the hardest thing they will ever have to do in their lives; which is why it's really important to PLAN AHEAD; educate yourself about the health risks of smoking, be familiar with symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, know what products are available out there to help, liase closely with your local doctor, and surround yourself with people who support you (people who don't smoke!).

Kids are GOLD - your daughter may well have saved your life!

statistics say people who decide to quit spontaniously will stay off the smokes compared to someone who plans for it.

I havent regularly smoked for around 8 years, but unfortunately i still do have the odd hiccup.

Another piece of information that doesn't see the light of day often is that smoking exponentially increases the risk of being affected by asbestos, this is paticularly alarming for people working in the building industry, or somewhere like sydneys trains.

i envy you all.
god knows i've tryed. patches, gum, cold turkey the lot. i just don't have the will power. i give it a go, then when it comes to the week end, out with mates and a drink in the hand the other feels naked....so i light up. i would love to give the bloody things up. now with these new packs with the awfull bloody pictures on the i couldn't handle it so what did i do? quit? NO i brought a metal case where the pack fits in and now it is out of view. i wish i never started (10 years now) now my wife is saying things like well if we have kids they want a dad in 20 years time!! i hate that. even when i stress at work what's the first thing i do? light up. coffee in the morning.....with a smoke.
I HATE THE BLOODY THINGS
seriously i envy you all.
Mrs TEK every time you see me at a show or comp and you see me with a smoke i give you permission to smack me across the head and pull the bloody thing out of my mouth. (hope that will help)
MRS.TEK
I tried quitting many times Jay and it didnt happen, even after i was so sick with this heart condition where i nearly died, a yr and a half later i started again. 5 yrs later i quit for good and i feel stronger than i did about it before. I think the saying is true, you have to REALLY want to quit. I was out with the boys tonight, smoking everywhere, and yeh i felt like one, coz we all know having a smoke in a social scene is great, but i had to keep thinking how proud of myself i am that i have stopped and that i didnt need it. If i can do it Jay, so can you buddy.
And im gonna love wacking you in the head when you have one hehehe.
To be honest, the hardest thing is keeping off em, because you know as soon as you have one drag of a ciggie, its back to smoking 20+ a day.
And i love the one main thing, NOT waking up with a sore chest from smoking to much.
