G'Day,

The ol' tape recorder has finally crapped out. So it's time to upgrade!

HDD recorder looks like a better choice IMO but I don't really know a lot about the tech behind all this stuff so someone needs to tell me which is better. Then, someone needs to tell me what I should buy. Budget is *sensible* although we tend to splurge sometimes. Oh right, I assume the recorders have their own digital tuner inbuilt? So I can watch something else while recording.. seems like a given.

Another option is small PC similar to those TiVo boxes in the states... We don't really have the (lost for the right word) 'options' like they do? (TV Guide inbuilt into TiVo box for selecting what to record etc.)

Cheers!

have had a pioneer dvd player since 2000 and it has never, ever skipped a beat. mate just bought the above model dvd/hdd recorder and loves it. aunt has first dvd recorder pioneer released in oz and has also not skipped a beat yet.
when it comes to dvd technology, i honestly think pioneer is the best you can buy

(and no, i dont have a single pioneer product in my car, the above opinion is based on experience, not brand loyalty)

OOOO DVD and HDD! Never even thought of that *doh*. I have no doubt about Pioneer btw. Our Pioneer 6 stacker just recently kicked it in, after something like 20 years of abuse. Went to JB Hifi and bought a new one (barely different from the original) and can still use the original cartridge smile.gif

Thanks heaps mate. I'll wait and see what others suggest as well as alternatives but I'll make sure the money man hears about it.

Pioneer DVD/HDD recorders have analogue tuners. You can record "digital" via the composite or S-video from external set top box.

LG also make decent DVD/HDD recorders for the price...

Panasonic also arent too bad, im pretty sure they were one of the first who brought out HDD recorders aswell...

Steer clear of Philips, weve had may bad experiences with them (dont let the 3 year warranty thing suck u in either!)

but as Stone mentioned, Pioneer prolly make the best DVD/HDD recorders, id buy one of those, but if the budget didnt allow it, id prolly opt for LG...

just my 2 cents...
