I'm after a sub $1000 SQ head unit to replace my ageing Clarion. It still works PERFECTLY but its lack of features shows.. even my crappy 2000 model SONY had features like individual F/R/Sub cross-overs & levels & 5 band graphic eq.
I want to run my Focal 180W splits active, & the only HUs I've found that fit requirements I'd imagine I'll want, are the 2 top Alpine units, CDA -9855R & 53R, both having 6ch time alignment & 5 band Parametric eq.
Can someone suggest wether these or something else would be of better use??

Michael

Dont discount a Head Unit mate because of its lack of features.....thats precisely what makes some very good ones. Take the McIntosh for example...
Clarion has always made some very schmick sounding units. Eclipse are nice too, though I personally dont like the look of em. Fancy pinball machine replica's IMO.

Nah. Im 99% sure that the Bremen cant, because AndrewK on this forum sold his for just that reason if my memory serves me right.
Also, the Eclipse CD5000 > CD7000 in terms of tuning features.

Pioneers new P80Rs I belive also has the capabilities you are looking for, but its still a new deck so I don't know huge amounts about it's features. Reportedly it retails for under $1000.

I'm not discounting my Clarion... its just that its getting old, looks a bit boxy & doesn't even display MP3 labels without the stacker?? & I figures if I can et a nicer HU for a similar price to a stand-alone DSP it'll be a bonus.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.. let me know if yas have more.. I'm off to track down someone in North-West Qld who can use an RTA to tune it... LOL

If you want to spend money, look at the Clarion HX-D2, Pioneer P90R, Alpine StatusF#1,

Thats correct, so he decided on getting the alpine processor instead.
Just get a HXD2, if you're willing to part with the $$$$ for one.
IMO the best looking/functioning SQ deck ive ever used/owned.

Clarion HX-D2 is highly regarded at the moment for SQ purposes.

the clarion is also 2k tho which is a little exxy considering he asked sub 1000.
I would say one of the two alpine units u have suggested would be good for watt u want, otherwise im sure clarion make something in the 1000 price range that will fit your bill

To echo what another user said in the similar thread to this:
QUOTE (~thematt~ @ May 16 2006, 04:59 PM)

OORRR you could try Alpine DVA-9861 with the H701 Processor
[...]
At 1600 for both brand new, you are looking at the middle of the spectrum (between P80 and HXD2).

My vote- Pioneer Pioneer DEH-P80RS $899 RRP IIRC (Could probably get it for a little less) and will do the job no problems.

I FINALLY found some info on this unit (not on .au site), but I'm a little confused on the features... like 'Auto EQ' & Auto Time Alignment' & 'Auto EQ for 3-way network' ... is that like where u place a mic at the listening postion & it sets it up automatically? If so that'd be good... dunno where I'd get it tuned round here otherwise.
Could someone offer an explanation on its features??
And as for the HXD2... I just bought a house so I couldn't really justify $2G for a CD player.

The 9853R, the 9855R and the CD7000 are options
I've spent alot of time with the 9853, 9855 and the CD7000,
The Eclipse far outshines either of the alpines, for functionality and pure SQ.
provides a much cleaner signal, and better stereo imaging that either of the Alpines.
Both Alpines are GREAT decks, sound awesome, but the eclipse just sounds flat out better.
and the 11 band PEQ separated 5 bands for Tweeter, 5 bands midrange, 1 band sub is far far better than
alpines 5 band PEQ for overall.
I had difficultys with the Alpine eq in the way it heavily effected the other speakers, when you made a adjustment in a range, and if the adjustment was quite large, it would just drop the volume of the whole sound stage around that point. which makes things confusing. Probably a good idea, confusing none the less.
Both Eclipse and Alpine have 6 way Time Alignment, both work the same.
the X/over in the Eclipse is a little better to use however. and makes more sense, especially over the 9853R.
Both Eclipse and alpine have roughly the same amount of adjustable frequencys, and both can do 6-24db.
unlike the Clarion which is limted to 6-18db. If you've ever played with active 24/18 db, there is quite a difference, and it's nice to have the 24db option.. hence I'm still waiting on a HXD3...
If I had $1800 to blow it'd be a Eclipse AVX5000 + DCU105. 3 Way active front stage, Rear stage, Stereo Sub capability + or Centre/Sub setup. (for 5.1 or not)
There is a advantage with the Alpines however,
is the ability to add the PHX-701+RUX-701, but you can't go optical link from the 9855 or 9853, so your still not really getting that far ahead, the PHX701 is really nice, IF you have a 9861 or similar to optical up to it.

Cool.. but don't wanna spend anywhere near $1800, or have video though.
The CD7000 looks a bit poxy but it seems to have the goods.. any ideas where I can get one? Online??
Still really interested in the Pioneer too... anyone able to tell me bout those features??

Agreed it doesn't look that great.
They are $990 Retail I believe,
so $900 or even less would be achievable.
I'm in 2 minds about the actual functional use of the outside dials and buttons on the CD7000 myself
I wish they kept the dual dial setup really.. but in any case, it's got the goods in terms of a sub $1k Pure SQ unit.
the thing I don't like is no option to hook up a processor, then again anything that does have that option, has no features to start with.
