Full Version: Wanting a louder sub in the same conditions.

Hey guys,

At the moment I'm running a Hertz ES300D at 2 Ohms into a Zapco 500.1 Monoblock. The sub is in a 35Litre box (after woofer displacement). It sounds pretty nice, however I'm looking for something with a bit more output extra SQ would be fine but I'm quite happy with the sound of the sub. I went vented and it was louder but didn't sound as good. Sensitivity of the sub is 97dB yet I've heard other setups that are louder but now that I've got my boot setup nice and neat I don't really want to change the box and I don;t want to spend a fortune so...

I'm looking for a sub with reasonable SQ that will be louder than my current sub and will do that nicely in a 35litre box.

I've had a look (on the net and in WinISD) at the PG Xenon subs and they seem to have a very smooth output in a sealed box and the Matrix Elite seems to be pretty popular here. I'm guessing what I really need is a sub with more excursion than my current one or should I be looking at either a new enclosure or multiple amps. I heard a car with a Kicker 400 Watt monoblock and 2*12 Kicker Comp subs and it could go air vibrating in your face loud.

Cheers smile.gif

Buy a sub with a higher efficency spec.
Kev
Could you please elaborate?? Buy higher effeciancy spec do you mean SPL...? 97dB is pretty up there. I would have thought it had more to do with displacement and xmax ???

You are right, you will have trouble finding something with a better SPL spec.
Only other option for louder is more power.
Kev
Are you sure its just purerly about the SPL spec? You don't see a lot of SPL cars with Hertz subs just because they're 97dB ??

Its about both the effieciency and the power handling.

Easiest way, an example.

Two magical woofers A and B. We will assume they have audibly identical SQ etc.
A is rated at 90dB/w at 1 meter, and has a music power handling of 100w
B is rated at 87dB/w at 1 meter, and has a music power handling of 400w

Now, with the same power, B will will be quieter.
B with double the power will be the same.
B wih 4 times the power will be louder.

Basically, you need a woofer with higher power handling, that is nearly as efficient. Or several....

Hey Kev,

You should be studying/doing exams! haha

Sicne where mates and all, ill let you have my DD sub for $500, with that stupid Pioneer grille that doesn't fit haha

Lol I am (if anyone actually understands Ampere's law PM me tongue.gif), might have to pass on the DD sub... this is the SQ section tongue.gif

That's not entirely true. But it gets thee point across.

For the poster, first thing i would do is confirm the true specs of your sub. 97dB sensivity a 1 watt at 1 meter, combined with very high power handlining sounds to good to be true. Maybe they are pulling an "infinity" on you where they quote cabin and enclosure gain in the sensivity levels.
Alpine State of Mind
ive never heard a sensitivity that high and was under the impression that the higher the sensitivity the lower the SQ....are you sure its not 87db sensitivity because thats more like the average...

http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/Doc/pdf_es300d.pdf

Its measures at 1m/2.83V which is slightly higher than the usual 1m/1W but its still a sensitive sub. Xmax is 9mm. Wouldnt SPL depend on displacement which is dependent on cone area x excursion? Hence why larger subs are louder in general.

What about suggestions for a repplacement sub?
