For pure CD transport quality this deck is equivalent to anything else on the market short of something like the Clarion HX-D2 or Alpine F#1 Status due to its run off the mill D/A converters and sampling rate and so-on.

Middle of the road. If you liek the pioneer 9650 but want to save some pennies to spend on better fronts or install (where you will get an sq improvement). Then grab the 8650, same running gear, just a different face.

I been using the 9650 for about 18 months now
it's a reasonable deck.
the internal graphic equaliser is a little noisy for high-end SQ (still within spec though), but for daily driving it's excellent.
the built-in crossovers are great, and has auto EQ and time alignment - this works well.

the 8650 and the 9650 are superseded by the 9850 and 8850
the differences on paper are that the 9850 and 8850 has 16 band eq compared to the old which had 13 band, while also 9850 has bluetooth...
but this also means you can good deals on the old models if there are still any in stock

Sorry to hijack someone elses thread but do you have an opinion on the DEH P80RS?

I've got the 8650 and I love it!!! The good thing about this unit is the EQ and the line out features.
I'm on the cusp of setting this baby into network mode (to get the best out of the time alignment features).
In terms of SQ, the 8650 has a SN ratio of 110dB (the 9650 is I think slighty lower maybe 105dB?) and both have a whopping 6.5volt output (in the 2005 series due to improvements). They both have Burr Brown 24bit DACs and offer other wank factor stuff like BBE (which IMO may adversly affect SQ)
The P80RS is quite similar to both the 8650 and the 9650, and its got features which put it up a lil higher in SQ terms, but this is marred slightly by the dated display (which some would argue is slightly better for day viewing). It does have a better D/A convertor chip setup and you can use the auto EQ in network mode but, the biggest plus for the 80rs is the fact that it's got a L/R independant 16 band graphic EQ and L/R independant LPF/HPFs, which may offer more control on freqs.
