Hi,

I have a company Ford BA falcon Wagon.

Recently, whenever I go to start it, I crank it for about 10 seconds at each interval for about two minutes and it doesnt start. So I leave it and come back and try again and after a couple more trys it fires up perfectly.

It seems to happen whenever its cold. I am pretty sure its not the electrical system as it seems to be cranking fine and there hasnt been any strange outages.

Any ideas ? I am going to take it for a service but I was wondering what to expect.

Stuff waiting for the service. Take it back ASAP and get em to fix it if its under warranty.

when mum and dad had falcons on gas (2 x ef & 1 x au). they were a bastard to start on gas at cold start. maybe try doing cold starts on petrol

It seems to be a common problem with Falcons on LPG in the cold.

Was reading about it on the Sydney Morning Herald website - "A report in today's Sun-Herald newspaper says many of the fleet's LPG-reliant vehicles have suffered from gas-related problems, causing cars to stall or shut down without warning."

is it just lpg or dual fuel?

caus if it's dual fuel, they start on gas, and then flick over to petrol once it's cranked.

other than that, i have a mazda wagon on gas, that on a cold mornings usually requires a bit more of a kick in the guts to get it going.

If anyone is interested...

Well it didnt start this morning, started wearing the battery out so I phoned, Ford Assist and the technician from Ford assist just tapped the LPG piston that the user below is talking about and it started up no problems. I than took it to ford and they replaced it under warranty.

He said it was a pretty common issue, so thanks for the replies !

This is an excerpt of a post from a user on fordforums.com.au,

Thanks to Calaway and also in some respects Charger from CAA. smile.gif

Two things that are a problem with these systems - The solenoid casings crack particularly the one at the fuel line lock off on the converter. Also in some cases the heater hoses leak coolant which drips into this cracked casing causing non starting.

However, based on what you descibe the problem will be the lock off or possibly idle solenoid piston sticking in its bore. LPG wax builds up on these lock off pistons. On first start (when the engine is cold) this wax causes the piston to stick and basically speaking, no gas flow. Normally by tapping the lock off or switching on and off a few times unsticks the piston. A simple fix, remove the piston and clean with a solvent. Must be done by a suitably qualified tech.

Make sure that you are very specific when speaking to whoever is servicing you're car as most people are not aware of this problem.
