Full Version: 12" Type R be better?

Hi guys,
I currently have a 12" Fusion PowerPlant sub. Its the slightly older one which cannot be found on the site anymore. If a remember properly its rated at 450RMS. Anyway, I wanted a more tighter and punchier bass so i decided to replace the ported box with my sealed box that i have made up. The box is 45lts (I built it according to the specifications that the manual gave me).

I hooked it up all my speakers to the amps (mono - Alpine MRD-M605)(4ch - Alpine MRV-F545).
Here are details of my setup:

head deck - Eclipse CD5435
front - JL VR600 at HPF 80hz (2v)
rear - JL TR600 at HPF 80hz (2v)
sub - 12" Fusion PowerPlant at 72hz (2.5V)

After playing around i realized that even in a sealed box, the sub doesn't really give punchy bass at all.... and also after playing a few songs.... I realized that the sub kinda has trouble playing some notes and it really sounds funny.... eg.... It can play deep notes very well and loudly.... but once you start going to more midbass, it lacks out alot and feels like the sub isn't playing loud enough.....

Does this sound like a tuning problem? or is that how the sub really is?
Becuase I was offered a 12" Type R sub for $160.... But im not quite sure if i will get the same problem if i replace it.... Will it sound alot better with the Type R???

I just recently faced the sub upwards and it helped abit.... But the problem is still there....

Anyone can any suggestions???
(btw the system is in a 94 Honda Prelude)

Thanx in advance

what are the xover filters set at, for both the sub and speakers? i would suggest a LP around 80Hz and a HP around 90Hz.

is this a brand new type-R from a shop? exactly what model? does its impedence suit the M605? if it's from a shop, then see if they guarantee improved performance, otherwise get a refund or exchange for something else.

chance are, it will sound better as they are a pretty accurate sub in the right box (eg: 1cuft sealed or around 1.8cuft ported). fusion's give me the impression they are more about 'loud' than accurate.

my xover filters are set at similiar hz as what you suggested already and still no go....
the type r sub is 2nd hand and im not quite sure what model it is.... i always thought a alpine type r sub would be all the same.... is it that much difference??? i know my mono amp is 2ohm.....

also i think your certainly right about fusion being more about loud than accurate.....

3 gens of type-R:

*SWR-1240 (SVC 4ohm) and 1240D (DVC 4ohm)
*SWR-1241 (SVC 4ohm) and 1241D (DVC 4ohm)
*SWR-1222D (DVC 2ohm) and 1242D (DVC 4ohm) *current models*

could be old or new, could be 4ohm or suitable for 2ohm. you'd wanna check. tongue.gif

not big performance difference between them. lots of cosmetic changes and few build design changes to improve reliability (eg: tinsel leads on 1st gen were prone to breaking over time).
