Sorta new to sub set-ups... searched tutorials, threads etc looking for info on 'open air subs'... when u dont have enuff room in boot for a sub-box, one option is apparently go for an 'open air' sub set-up where ur whole boot is the sub box, and the face of your subs are against the wall... looking for general info on this kind of thing - can anyone link me to some threads that i havent managed to stumble across?

Or if no real talk about that yet happenned - can we start some here... can any sub become an 'open air sub' ? or are some brands/models specially for it?

And if my hard top roof is folded into the boot (hence why i cant fit a sub-box) and taking up all the 'open air' will this negate the sub quality anyway coz there's no open area for them to resonate in (coz its full of folded sheet metal roof)?

Yeah - need advice / links please on this type of install.

Cheers

Tis called "Free-air" or "IB" or "infinite baffle". Perhaps try searching again with those keywords.

Certainely possible, but wont go as loud or low as a boxed sub.
not sure about the resonances with the roof. Depends on metal thickness/construction etc...try it and see..if it rattles take steps to remedy it tongue.gif

This article was a classic - I've actually got a copy at home where they describe how to put a system together for $300 to equal the systems most of this forum spend easily over a grand on. They recommend (amongst other things) pinching the speakers and crossovers out of busted TVs, but, more importantly, talk about going to a toyota wreaker and getting a couple of the free air subs out of the lexus and soarers, usually for about $40-$50 each. Its a pretty damn interesting article, I'll see if I can scan it in and watch all the pro's and CAASQ players go to town on it.

stay tuned..

I've seen Mercedes sedans with premium sound systems which have four 6- or 8-inch free-air subs in the rear parcel shelf. They sound brilliant too.
