The black heavy sound deadener that you speak of is really only any good on FLAT surfaces, like the outer door skin. Do not use it on the inner door skin unless it is flat. I have tried it on the inner one and it did next to nothing, but made a considerable difference on the outer one. Personally I wouldn't waste dynamat on the outer doorskin as this is just as good if not better.
I used Gel Grip to stick it down. Don't use Kwik Grip as it is quite liquid and won't stay on vertical surfaces too well. Use a paint brush that you won't need afterward. It stuck alright on the inner skin but I am going to use it on the outer skin this week sometime when I get my Dynamat Bulk Pack.
Have to agree - don't try the Jaycar HEAVY DUTY SOUND BARRIER DAMPING MATERIAL on uneven surfaces as the material doesn't really flex or expand much. Gel Grip is the way to go as it can be used on vertical or upside down and holds well. Just be careful as it can make a hell of a mess.
I'd have to say that having used the Jaycar stuff and Dynamat Xtreme, it's Dynamat all the way IMHO at $150 for a Door kit. If you use the cheaper stuff you'd spend 4 x $11.25 + $20 for Gel Grip + brush - say $70 which is half price, but a heap of time in cutting, gluing and sticking. If you go the IMPROVED stuff it would be about $100 plus the time factor.
So after the fact and having tried both ways, Dynamat is much easier to apply and moulds to very uneven surfaces. I also have a concern with solvent-based adhesives on painted metal.
That's my opinion but good luck with whatever you decide to do.
