Full Version: Which Anti-Virus?

hey guys...

with all the (unfortunate) talk lately of the virus in the forum etc, ive read peoples replies where they say how their anti-virus checker detects it and immediately removes the virus...

i currently am running BitDefender Professional Edition v7.2 AntiVirus & Firewall in my comp, which has served me great so far, but when i get a virus, (like the one from this site for example) all that happens is i get a pop up box in the corner saying ive been infected, and it gives the file location, then u click OK on that and thats it... it doesnt do anything else, LOL, it doesnt remove it, i have to open Bit Defender Console and do a virus scan (either a full scan, or i can select the target location) for it to be removed...

basically, my question is, i want a antivirus software that will remove the viruses as soon as theyve been detected... any recommendations?

thanks guys

PS: i chose BitDefender coz its a anti-virus AND firewall package together, so if i remove this to replace it with another, then ill need a standalone firewall aswell... smile.gif
SPL_Lancer
Norton, its worked well for me so far.
XHELL
Nod32.

Nortons gave me nothing but greif...

I use AVGfree - it's free
and for a browser, steering clear of internet explorer is always wise for security.

I've always used a combination of Symantec Antivirus (corporate version of Norton Antivirus, uses WAY less resources), BlackICE firewall and Microsoft Defender (used to be Giant, and then Microsoft Antispyware).
I've been very happy with the performance and reliability of all three.
I can tell you now, I go to every scummy piece of crap website out there and download things left, right and centre and have NEVER been infected with anything.
There was also a virus spread around at the last (and only, bloody boring those things) LAN I went to, and out of about 350 people, me and a guy next to me (who nicked these things off me tongue.gif) were the only ones not affected!

i just installed kaspersky antivirus on my sisters computer and that seems to be really good, found alot of stuff norton didnt and isnt a resource whore

best to have two anti virus programs i found.

i use Nortons and Vet on my fathers machine. we never have a problem (except for nortons ability to take over ur entire computer)

on my computer i have no anti virus (still have the firwall on the router). i never have spyware and i never have virus's. so it really depends on wat u use it for i guess. if u do alot of downloading or emailing a virus checker is good piece of mind, but general surfing of the net i very rarely get a virus.

but if u do have info u dont want to be lost then ur best bet is to backup regularly. thats the best anti virus software that i use. backup and format.

avg, mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer, spybot s&d, ad-aware, bho demon, ewido and hijkackthis
mad89
yep, currently i use mozilla, spybot search and destroy, adaware se professional, and bit defender (as mentioned)

i think i have that corporate symantec antivirus on a disc sumwhere, i mite give that a go... does it automatically detect AND delete infections?

what about a standalone firewall, anyone have any suggestions? preferably a 'free' one, whether it be downloadable, or someone wants to 'donate' it to me biggrin.gif

thanks for the tips guys...

cheers

What S.A.V. does is entirely up to you.
Yes it can automatically detect and delete in real-time, but you can also set it up to detect and prompt for action, or have a scheduled scan, or automatically 'quarantine' an item, etc. etc.

Do Adaware and Spybot have real-time scanning as well?
Last time I used these (a number of years ago now) they only had the ability to scan and repair an already 'infected' system.
This may have changed, I don't know, but Microsoft Defender will alert you when something is trying to install itself and asks for your confirmation, thus fixing the problem before it begins.

For a firewall, the Windows XP one is better than nothing, but not great.
I highly recommend BlackICE (the program, not Steve tongue.gif) if you can 'get' it from somewhere (it's not free), but i'm sure there are plenty of others that people will recommend too.

adaware and spybot, need to br 'run' before it will detect anything... then once detected, it quarantines, then deletes them...

any recommendations where i can get blackICE from... tongue.gif wink.gif

I use Symantec and ZoneAlarm. Have found ZA to be more effective than other software i've used.
Pulse-R
adaware full-version (you pay for it) has realtime scanner, otherwise the free one only scans when you tell it to (can be set to scan each time you power on, or once a week, etc...)
marcs
Norton Internet security
Macafee Internet security
Trend Micro PC Cillin

These are all packages that you can get bundled with new pcs or buy over the counter from places like Harvey Norman, DSE etc. Good choice for people who are not very literate at computers.

I personally find that Norton hogs a crap load of resources, increases my boot up and shut down times dramatically. I'll be switching back over to avg and zone alarm.

At work I use norton purely and simply because thats what all; the other PC's were loaded with before I joined the company and at $35 per year its a cheap investment for the company and keeps us all on the same page. concidering we are mostly just doing excel and word type processes the 3.2 gig machines dont need a crap load of resourses and so norton can do its thing and it doesnt bother us. At home I use AVGfree - never had a problem. I neverused antivirus software till a few years ago when my brother started gaming pretty hardcore and was downloading beta versions of patches and updates which made our network pretty vunerable.
