ever since i went active with my system, ive had this lovely hissing noise coming from the tweeter, its running off 2 channels of an f240, and the gains arent that high but high enough, i cant get rid of the noise, should i just upgrade to a higher power amp to elimanate this problems, i sourced a boston 2x100rms amp to solve it, should this work??

More power will mean that you can reduce gains somewhat but this will only work if the noise is amplifier gain related. Your going to have to track down where the hiss is coming from first.
What type of active XO are you useing?

are you using the analog or digital input of the PXA-H701?

the analog inputs (AiNet) are VERY noisy.

If the h/u has digital out (Toslink socket on the back) then get an optical lead and use that - you still need to select 'digital' in the setup menu, to tell the PXA that you don't want the analog input. (although it will still have analog input for radio).

Narrow down the problem, does the noise change with your acceleration? indicative of altenator whine.
Plug in a portable device straight into your amps - listen (be careful of full range signals to your tweets)
Plug it in at the headunit end of your rca's- listen
and so on.

Narrow down which component is causing you problems.

Check rca's re route accordingly. Not near power wires or auto electrics. (Especially if they are cheap)
Check grounds on your amps and make sure they are big and short and to a location that is free of paint (makes good contact)
Its not your tweeters noise floor per se, just your system noise floor, so whilst noise could be induced from anywhere; if you are using reasonable quality gear in good condition it is likely to be installation related.

Good luck

edit: More power will help lower your noise floor, but do the simple and cheap things first.

The basic jist with getting rid of high noise floor hiss is to place all of the 'gain' at the front of the system, so the source is first and has its output maxed (without clipping) then apply the minimum gain at any input stage to arrive at the last component (amplifier) with minimal gain.

I noticed on the PXA if you turn up the gain much above 20 you start to get hiss. Don't know how it works with an AiNet head unit.
antisven
grounds are good, its just from the tweeters nowhere else, the pxa input is using ainet and the 9835 has no optical output to use,
Pulse-R
hmmmmmmm
sounds like you need to upgrade your head unit to be as good (or better) than the new speakers....

The PXA is definitely 20 or 30dB less noise using the optical input.

well i got me a boston gt22 in an attempt to stop the noise, it didnt work lol, in fact my tweeters now have alternator whine that now outdoes the original hiss, how crap is that?

i am interested in how you can fix this problem dude , so keep posting all the details good.gif ...........zion

As I said, the PXA-H701 is a noisy beast when using the AiNet analog input. There are really two ways to get rid of the noise.

1. Get a H/U with optical output to feed the PXA

2. Get a line-driver to boost the RCA signal from the H/U before it gets to the PXA. Use the PXA RCA inputs, and don't use the inputs from the AiNet. (the problem with this is you may end up overdriving the PXA inputs)

i have the same problem after going active on a set of oz matrix splits.
source is alpine 7998r (no pxa)
amp is audiosystem f4-380 (4x95wrms) with gains very low.

gains at 0 i still had hiss, but also had no mid-bass. so turned the gains up to about 1/3 and hiss is still there, only slightly louder but now have a fuller sound.

unsure how to fix my problem as yet - dont intend to upgrade to pxa unit anytime soon. might have to troubleshoot over the break.
Gordo!
Just with my half-assed testing of speaker pos. in my car, I ran my splits active off the headunit's amp. With the headunit grounded directly to the battery I had hiss, with it grounded to the chassis the hiss was gone.

Maybe check your grounds? smile.gif

spyne - what is the hiss you get - while the music is playing, or always?
I just installed a 7998r, and there is no hiss unless it's in the recording.

I agree, I've removed them from several systems, gaining SQ as a result.

All marketing hype, TA crap if you ask me!

You need to work out where hiss is entering, and so need a set of muting plugs. Mute amp and then go back thru signal path and workout where hiss is entering. Only then can you work towards cure

after much more researching im admitting defeat, the noise is from the processor for certain and theres nothing i can do bar upgrade to an optical input
Pulse-R
The other thing to remember, is even with optical output on the deck, only the CD player works, the radio will still use the analog, but then there is more noise on the radio than the PXA creates, so radio will still sound the same as now.. The CD will be 20x clearer (about 13dB quieter noise).
antisven
well i unplugged the ainet inputs and used straight rcas from the head deck, while theres still noise, at least now its minimal and it doesnt increase in volume with i crank it up on the deck, still saving to upgrade to an optical out unit tho
antisven
well its finally fixed properly once and for all, once i added the optical input from my new dva7996 there was no noise, none whatsoever, problem solvered!!
TEGBOY
^^Damn, I wish mine was that easy to fix. I added the optical and it made no difference to mine.

The only thing I can see myself doing is either throwing the IVA-D300 and PXA at the closest tree or, buying a hugely powerful amp, that won't require me using the gains. Since, anytime the gain on the amp is moved, then its "hiss" city.

I have called Alpine and got no satisfaction. I have even ran dedicated 8awg power and earth cables for the IVA and PXA.. nothing has worked.

cant say im using alpine....although i still have a fair amount of system noise that is NOT the head unit

only thing is that it wasnt there at one comp....was at the next....i cant understand

when i get my new head unit...or maybe before ill check my wiring and re wire if nessecary

its a hissing/crackling/staticy noise that i can hear at low volume and is quite audible at almost full volume

due to my gains being set quite low i use the higher end of the head units range in volume....but when i get a chance im going to have another play with everything
