hey im interested in making a box for my two 15inch subs to fit into a hyundai elantra hatchback . atm the box is designed so the sub shoot straight up in to the hatch window with the slot port shooting backwards is this anygood for spl or is there something i can do to get a couple more dbs. the woofers are to big to put on the side of the box so i was think abit of fibreglass to angle the subs
cheers andrew

the port should be facing the same direction as the sub.
also, pointing the subs upward is not the most efficient way of mounting subs, facing the rear is usually good for loading.
i would say goodbye to your rear window seals if they are big subs

There is no golden rule, some cars like port and sub/s firing up, some like to have the port back and woofers up, some like both port and woofers firing back.
The only way to find out is get on a meter and test test test.

Woofers up and ports back is sometimes called a 'CRX' enclosure. Some cars love 'em whereas they aren't the best in others.

so no one has had any experience with a hyundai elantra? i think if if no one has tryed it in my car i build it the way i designed it and if it does sound good i angle the subs to aim them more into the hatch. another question i dont see many people having fibreglass spl boxes so whats the good there not strong enough? would it be better if i had the port on the same side as the woofers?
cheers sorry for the noob questions

It is all about testing, start with your port on the same facing as the woofers, with everything firing up, get on a meter, test it, then turn the box over and rearload it, test it again.
Fibreglass whilst strong doesn't have the density to be useful in SPL applications.
Also MDF is alot easier to make changes to when testing.
I see u are on the coast, go pay a visit to Brad at Cartunez (23 Wrights Place, Arundel) he will be able to help u out with meter time for a small fee, or if u are nice enough maybe free, dunno though.

He's also got a tonne of SPL boxes sitting there (and for sale).

what kind of shape is the elantra?? as a general rule i usually go on the fact that most liftback shapes are louder with a crx box config. while most small hatch designs benenit from having rear loading... but usually you don't have the room. so by making a bigger box and loading up you are louder anywayz.
but as stated each car is different.. and that thing about the sub having to be on the same side as the port is rubbish.

get your gear in then go to a store and ask them to test some different box's if you plan on buying an spl box from a store they should do this for you.
otherwise you might have to just test.
