Had a bit of a play last night with long exposure shots.
Here's my favorite one:

Going through all of my shots, theres quite a few that would look great except they are under exposed. I was only keeping the shutter open for about 5 seconds for most of the shots.
I need to explore my camera more, but I am already finding its limits and I'm thinking of upgrading (Canon A70). Oh and my tripod is too short (1 meter) so I'm going to buy a new tripod this week some time too

I'm hooked!!

Another fellow night photographer! I love night shots, heaps of stuff to get right but the shots look great when you do.
Here's a couple of my fav's.
Rexnet Cruise last year, and yes that is lightning in the sky... 15sec exposure to get that shot.

My car when I first bought it.

And this just turned out great so I thought I would throw it in. Still night with a solid swell at the local rock pool.

It's amazing the effects increased shutter length can give. All the above photos are well done.
XHELL, I love that first one.
Gonadman2, the last one(the rocks) looks eerie. Good job.
Sigmeister, that's just showing off

Yeah I'm sure theres lots of spots around Geelong that are "hidden" that would make great backgrounds.
That street off James st in the city, wheres Cats is and the other cafe's, theres some good background lighting there too when there's no one around.
Do you know if you can get something to trigger the shutter externally with the A70? I think that's causing me some troubles, moving the camera when pressing the button. The other alternative is to put the timer on.

Some camera have a remote (Mine does but it's an Olympus) but I looked on the CANON website and it didn't show under the accessories. Are you using a tripod? If you are it sounds a bit flimsy if pressing the button is moving it. Perhaps look at something better and more solid maybe? Or as you suggested, just use the timer but try set it low (around 2 seconds if you can) so you don't have to wait for ages.

I particularly like that one by Wraybees, it looks totally surreal.
I can only get my hands on fairly basic cameras, but i'm keen on giving this a go.

Nice shots sig, you must have excellent control with your camera.
I only have a Panasonic FZ-5, nice big zoom, and fast burst mode but quite limited aperture stops.

Agreed. not at any one time anyway.
But like google earth, stitching works. Still not convinced abou tit being fake or real for that matter.
Having spent a bit of time in central and western USA the # of lights looks right to me. If it is fake, who ever did it sure did spend alot of time getting population VS lights ratio right.
Oh well, sorry if the pic disapoints. I like it.

^^if you can, try setting the ISO speed of the camera as low as it goes.
Ie ISO 400 for fast action shots.
ISO 50 for nighttime shots.
the photo will be a LOT less grainy. caus that photo i took above, i took with a $200 canon camera. all you gotta do is get the settings right

thanks for the advice mate, ill try iso 50.
i just set it on the preset options lol =/ those pics look sharp
the camera's not that good either, i regret buying it. its a casio s600. when i take the pics and blow them up its not as clear as other cameras that go for a lot less. i bought it cos of its size cos its handy to carry around but it was a poor choice. shoulda gone a cannon or nikon for similar price.
mad_bison
Aug 18 2006, 11:30 PM
no worries.
and for info..i'm only using a $200 canon camera as well. and no tripod either. most of those i held the camera really still, sat it on the ground or any available ledge, or just kept taking it until i got it right.
mine's only a 3.2MP as well...yours is 6 lol
you might also want to put the resolution of your camera up to something like 1600x1200 or 2048x1536 (which is what i use)
from looking here, you should be able to do most of the settings you'll need..but from the looks of it, the longest you can have the shutter open is around 4seconds. this might limit you somewhat.
some of those were taken on 6secs or more delay (so to speak)
other than that, just play around with it until it works how you want it to

thanks a lot for the info mate.
but the thing is, i cant find any settings or methods to manual set aperture and all these things.
it changes by presets only and stuff =/
ive played around quite a bit..but still its not a 'sharp' camera. ie. take at 6mp it looks good, but if u fit to size, its blurry =/ my friend is also using an old $200 cannon and it comes out much better.
here is a pic at full res. 2048.
quite large, but if u see it its not sharp at all...i think i might have to cut my losses with this one =/
all u can really do is change the iso and ev but no shutter speed =/
mad_bison
Aug 21 2006, 04:23 PM
that's a fountain in rome.(i think)
i've been there a couple of times lol.
have you thought about changing the quality of the pics. ie fine, superfine, standard
and according to your settings manual you included.
2048 isn't full res. it's only 3MP.
full res is 2816x2112 at 6MP
you could then press menu (when in record mode) and make sure that you've got the image set on the highest quality (and hopefully largest number of DPI)
hopefully that may help a bit.

thanks for the response mate,
unfortunately it is on fine
maybe i did take that one at 3 cos i remember putting it down for a few cos i was running out of space! but really it is the same story..not that sharp and so on. u cant really see anything about shutter speeds at night time can u?
hehe yeh that fountains in rome, quite a few nice fountains there. wow u've been there a couple of times? lol its nice but everywhere in rome is too crowded and packed with tourists! i guess i am one
