You can use an email client (Thunderbird, Evolution, Outlook etc) to check your e-mail. Last I heard, hotmail charges for that.

I'm talking about the POP mail protocol (or something like that). What you're talking about (I think) is when you see the Welcome screen on XP it shows the last amount of unread emails you had since you last logged into Windows or MSN Messenger.

Who knows maybe I'm wrong.

pop lets you check an email accoutn using third-party software, such as outlook

If you have multiple email accounts (i have like, 7) it makes life a LOT easier. POP can be preconfigured to enter username/passwords. So you dont need to go through the web-based hassle of entering usernames and/or passwords.

Well if some get given away the person who recieves the account has another 100 to give, so therefore the supply is limitless, well unless we all get an account on here and start sending large many hundered MB files to each other then gmail could struggle
