hi there guys, for my yr 12 electronics project i built a dual 12" sub enclosure and now that it is complete and all up and running, i was wondering what my options are for testing them as i have to do some form of testing (dB etc). where should i place the dB meter and what other tests apart from measuring the dB can i do? im new to testing and stuff like that..so any help is appreciated.

thanx

As far as I know they usually put the meter at the base of the passenger side A-pilar

For dB Drag rules see www.dbdragracing.com.au

You need a sub in it as well tongue.gif

Also if its your project, just curious as to whether you are gonna compare it to maybe a factory type box or what? Also did you make the box to the specification of your particular sub? If you didnt this will effect the data you recieve. What sub and amp will you be running, im interested

of course i made the box to specs...and yes..it does have subs in it..2 12" Response Precision Carbon Fibre DVC subs running off a response precision 1000wrms monoblock. its a sealed enclosure as i didnt want a huge ported one as it took up 2 much space.

You should probably also do some testing to find the loudest resonant frequency of your car and then properly tune a ported box for max Db too... see Blackice's great tute below:

If you have access to a Clamp Meter & DMM, you can test for impedence rise, tuned frequency.. just toy around with some test tones, an AC Amps clamp & AC Volts DMM and applying Ohm's law.
Then you can do impedence over Hz, current over Hz, voltage over Hz and SPL over Hz graphs, discuss the relationships between them.

Get a CRO and check out the wave forms and stuff.. there's plenty of messing around you can do.

You can also test the box outside the car and compare the results to inside the car (impedance plots). If doing impedance plots to can see how well made the box is (i.e. box losses). There's heaps of testing you can do, but be warned that Car SPL does not always conform to rules, although having said that there is still planty you can do that would be a perfect project. You'd learn a lot alnog the way too.

thanx for all the helpful input guys...any1 got any tutorials on how to do all this stuff?

Check the tutorials forums.. specifically look at Begginers Guide to SPL Competition, How To Use A CRO and Measuring Amplifier Power. They all outline the proceedures to do all the testing everyones recommended to you.
