hey everyone
im about to embark on the fibreglassing sub box journey

im building 2x 70ltr enclosures for my 15s..
probably building the entire structure out of fibreglass
so any rough estimates on cost and yeah some of the stuff below:-

and need some estimates of how much gear ill need in relation to
resin.. how much of it
catalyst.. im presuming they would give you enough catalyst with the resin??
matting.. how much and also what sort ie what weight/thickness and type(chopped strand etc)..

so even how much others have used for their installs and what sort of install they did(pics help)

thanks everyone hope you can help me!

your also going to need a lot of sandpaper.
An orbital sander will make your life easier (dirt cheap ones, $50). And sandpaper itself can start to add up.

And a crapLOAD if you plan to paint it.

Umm, when u say u want the whole box to be fibreglass, is this excluding the back and base of the sub? Where abouts do u want it to sit.

To give u an idea, i used:

- 2-3 litres of resin with appropriate anount of catalyst provided
- 1, maybe 2 sqm of fibreglass matting
- cheap paint brush for each layer of resin, in my case around 8 (lost count) laugh.gif
- good sandpaper. I made a mistake on my first attempt of fibreglassing pods, I used cheap sandpaper, and it was so much harder to sand compared to good sandpaper that i used later on for the sub box. I recommend Norton sandpaper found at bunnings or repco. Makes sanding so much easier and faster.
- fleece material
- a mask when sanding
- disposable gloves
- k&h kahfil body filler (450g one)
- flexible plastic thing to apply the filler

I probably forgot some stuff, but thats the main ones.

This is wat i did with the fibreglassing. The back, sides and base is mdf, and the baffle is fibreglass.

abit of thread jacking here but its relevant

I have finished the frames for my door pods. In reguards to the material to stretch over them, does it need to be able to absorb the resin or can the material be reasonably thin?
808
it does need to absorb the resin as that is what gives you your base to lay fg on although you can use thin material if you want i used stockings once to get it to easily stretch around a difficult shape and others have used speaker cloth.

a material such as old flano shirts and things like that work well as they get harder as they seem to soak up more resin.
Blackers10
no worries about the thread jack .. its definatly relevant!

so when i goto spotlight what sort of material am i best looking for?
i was under the assumption of the same material as a school jumper like you get at primary school?? as they call it a polar fleece type jumper??

thanks guys

yep something like that should be fine.

You can go to any shop that sells cloth and get LYCRA COTTON. That's what I use and it's cotton so it won't react to resin. Stretches in x and y directions too. Lady at the shop told me they use it to make swimming suits. Good thing is that unlike fleece you get a relatively smooth surface after resining.

Hi there Bunnings sell an entire resin/catalyst/matting/brush kit which costs about 56 bucks. You probably need 2 or 3 of those sets to make your enclosure. Another way is to get stuff from a fibreglass place like Fiberglass International. You'll probably get stuff much cheaper there.

Also you need a little roller which looks like a large bolt to squeeze out excess resin and air from the matting. Obviously you can make it from a *eh hem* large bolt and coat hanger.

Hope that helps mate!

thanks nikoss
i got quoted the following from a place in caboolture (i live locally to it)

10m of 450g chopped strand matting $65

enough resin for the matting $160

catalist for the reson $10-12

is that about right for my box.. as i need 2x 70ltr enclosures plus any extra shapes i want to build to make the boot look nice..

yeah buying those repair kits aren't really the way to go at all for the prices people put on them nea.gif

yep that's not expensive at all, your resin should have been... 10kg? Rule of thumb - 1kg resin to 1sqm of matting. REMEMBER THE CATALYST>...
Blackers10
sweet
glad to know that is about the right price!

definatly gotta remember the catalyst!
have read numerous topics about not using catalyst and the person crying lol

thanks for the help guys
