Full Version: Thinned Bog

Hi guys,

I make sub boxes and fibreglass enclosures for a living, but there's a little something I would like to share. I learnt this at uni (Thanks Peter, UNSW IDES workshop manager).

If you have come to the stage where you've done your fleece and resined the thingo, you'll end up with a very rough surface. I remember somewhere I saw you can thin bog with resin, but here's my version. Scoop out enough bog (without hardener!!!) and place in a container. Add approximately 15-20% v/v of methylated spirits and stir hard. You should end up with a thinned out bog stuff. If you end up having what looks like puke silly.gif instead of milk, you've added too much metho. Add a bit more bog and stir till you get milky bog. THEN ADD sufficient HARDENER!!!! You can now use a brush to brush it all over the resined fleece. It will take longer to cure than pure bog, so go relaxxxx.

The reason why you don't add hardener first is so that it doesn't start to cure while you're mixing in the metho. This method proved invaluable to me and is easier to sand than pure bog - must be because of the metho. Hope this helps everyone. Also the shrinkage of this mixture is more than pure bog, so don't try filling up a hole with this stuff.

I am very keen to try this. How smooth is the final surface after sanding? Is there still heaps of air bubbles?

Thanks for the tip aswell!

Not sure what you mean? All the bog i've ever used doesnt have a seperate hardner?

Or do you mean you mix the f/g resins hardener with the bog....gah.

Could you perhaps re-word it all?

Bog has seperate hardener if you don't want to be waiting over night. Usually is red/pink in colour.

Pretty smooth I must say, but softer than normal bog.

Oh and also, might as well say that I'm using septone bog, not sure if it works with other brands. But septone makes good stuff.
