Full Version: Trimming speaker pod

I'm mounting some speakers in what i describe (very inaccurately) as the rear kickpanel. In my two seat car, its basically the spot jsut behind the doors, on the side of the car.

I've made some 6mm mdf trim panels with a raised section for the speaker (which will actually be mounted behind, so the surround/cone exursion doesn't hit the speaker cloth/grill.)

Question is - how do i attach the vinyl to this shape. From what i've made, i think the height difference between the main trim outline, and the raised section is too steep and will be impossible to get the vinyl to sit down perfectly.

Options are to:
a) Bog it up/out to smooth the corner a little.

b) One layer of fibreglass over the lot to make it a giant curve.

I don't like option 'a' cos i think it will be hard to keep "uniform'

With the fibreglass, could i jsut stretch one layer of fleece over the lot, and then resin it all up? Would that be strong enough? (nothing mounts to it, its basically jsut there to shape) I don't want to add much thickness at all to it, as its meant to be relatively stealthy and unimposing.

Cheers fellas

I would follow option a.

with b) fibreglass, you'd probably still put a layer of bog and then sand it down like you would with option a.
But fibreglass would be useful if you didnt have a surface to bog on. But you do..

If you have some spare vinyl around it might be worth seeing if it will stretch over. With a bit of heat vinyl will stretch a long way. Just make sure that there is a fair amount of adhesive on the edge of the raised part.

it doesn't look like you wouldn't be able to stretch vinyl over it but id make sure you have good adhesive in the corner and enough, but not too much, of it. if you put too much and it is thick you will see it. like mobass said use a bit of heat-a hair dryer should be enough.
