Hey Guys,
I am a Year 12 student that attends St Joseph's Catholic High School. Below is a picture of my major design project which I completed for Design and Technology. I just want a few comments from you guys telling me of your thoughts on my design and what you think of it. Your positive comments will be greatly appreciated.
**please no inappropraite talk and/or swearing, or smart remarks because I can print this and use this in my folio for evaluation, so it should remain relatively professional**

How much would you charge if i asked you to build one for me?
Those cup holders absolutely sold me. Seen too many nice tables wrecked from drinks being knocked over.

Yep, I love the cup holders too. I like the way you have made them a bit bigger to accommodate larger cups if needed.
If it was my table, I would have gone for green felt, but you've done a great job. Well done.

Comments: You have put a lot of thought and effort into making this poker table.
The materials you have use show that you understand the processes of designing something such as this.
As a result, the final design, including furnishings and trims create a realistic and classy finish that could be used in any games room, pub or even casino using a larger scale version of this design.
The clever design of drink holders and collapsible legs shows creativity and practicability.

awesome work
however, i'd have made it a tad longer (to seat 8 people), and as mentioned, would have used green felt too.
other than that,

EDIT - where's the space for the WPT card cameras??? hehehe

The way you have covered the edges of the table looks very professional. The way you have added metallic trim to the cup holders makes it all look very sleek.

I designed my table smaller than the normal ones as it is for home use and i was limited for space. Also because I play No Limit Texas Holdem with 3 of my good mates where we only take up 4 positions at the table. I have also allowed for 2 more people who turn up for 'Poker Nights' every now and again. It would be able to seat 8 tightly if needed, but me and my mates usually play and like playing with a maximum of 6 people. This is why I went for the smaller design to suit my needs better.
Thankyou for being honest with the colours. Most poker tales i've seen do use green, this is why I opted for something different to make my table unique from others...
Thankyou for all your comments, keep them coming!

I am currently in the process or re-upholstering my poker table. (I should have finished it ages ago but moved house).
Your design is great, I like the wood edging, looks really proffessional.
Colour is personal preference. I went for the standard blue and green felt on mine.
The only things I would have maybe done would be to have a cut out for the dealer, bigger table (But I understand your reasons) and maybe put some red stitching on the black vinyl.
Cup holders is a tops idea. Where did you get them? I would like to add them to mine now.

That is fantastic....
That rail looks comfy enough to sleep on.
Good job man.

Yeh i was thinking about putting in a dealer spot (cutout) but then I thought it wouldn't be a good idea as it is just me and my mates who play poker on the table where we just take turns in dealing. If there was a dealer spot, then when it is a person turn to deal, they would have to move seats to deal from the dealing spot and I though it would just be a waste of space.
It took me about 5 months doing bits and pieces here and there while I was also doing portfolio work which includes the designing, research and testing which is a very important part of the project. If I was just to build another table the same as the one I already have, from what I have learnt and experienced, I think it would take me approximately 1-2 weeks.
P.S Thanks for all or your comments

Nice work mate, you've demonstrated you understand purpose/audience by tailoring your work to a specific use (you and your mates playing poker). A very professional looking piece overall, however a couple of things that did come to mind whilst looking at it critically:
1) That looks like a reasonably heavy table that practically invites people to lay all over it (thanks to your excellent padding), yet from what little I can see the legs don't look terribly sturdy.
2) A little 'shelf' or cutout facing each playing position int he side of the foam/table would have been a nice touch.
Overall though, a great effort and one you can be proud of. I think the fact there's been interest in your building them for people shows just how good the work is.
Hope that helps, Blake.

thats what i was going to say about the legs, can u show us a pic from underneath?
dont know if u've studied moments in year 12, but put a force on shorteest diameter and try to calculate some forces and justify how u did ur design in ur report. (these forces would typically be people leaning on the table) and include a safety factor. this would be where the maximum moment would be. show u've thought about this sort of thing. i could probably comment better after seeing the bottom and how its joined, and give u some pointers on how to justify ur choices. You can slip into ur report that u've thought about material properties too (stress on the joints? what sort of joints used, why those ones? screws with bending moments can eat away at the wood), but also practicallity, ie. spills etc. but it looks like bending moments is the thing u should justify most. let me know if u need any help regarding equations and stuff.
overall it looks pretty good mate.

Yes I was a bit worried about the legs at first. I was thinking about attaching sturdy fixed legs but then it will be hard for me to transport the table to and from school for marking. I also looked into buying 4 chrome fixed legs but these would have set me back $400 AUS

The only other reason is because I do not have a specific area where my table will be set up all the time, it will be away in storage somewhere when not in use. I am thinking about changing the legs after the table gets marked as these legs are for practability, but for now, these foldable legs are very strong and I believe there is no way that they will collapse during a game of poker as they do not even budge or wobble at all when the table is set up...
P.S Keep in mind that my table is much smaller than usual ones for seating a maximum of 6 player, not 8-10.
Heres a pic of the underneath where the foldable legs are screwed to the bottom.

No i havn't studied studied moments and I don't quiet understand what you mean with calculating the forces etc. It would be good if you could give me some help regarding the equations to work out the bending moments and things.
Thanks

It wouldnt be hard to make two thickish rubber bars, with holes for those table legs.
You could just have a bracket underneath the table, fold out the legs, attach the bars, and away you go. Would be solid as a rock. The rubber would stop it damaging floors/sliding around.
The tables a rectangle. If the bars between the legs on the "long" side it'd effectively act as a brace too.

I'd definately have rubber on the feet, I'm not sure if you've done that already. Would it be possible to have four sets of legs rather than two? One on each side of the table?

i think u just explained to us why u went with ur choices. in design, u have to justify everything, so one of the criteria u address was portability and storage. be sure to include that in ur report and i think u'll do well.
the concept of bending moments, for ur case simply, would be like in the diagram below.
do something like the calculatin, the distance is from the midle axis of the table to the outer edge, this is where the max moment would occur. say u've thought about it and thats why u've made ur leg struts as wide as possible (in fact u know moments, u woulda thought of them during the construction) so it wouldnt topple over. maybe its a bit advanced but just putting the calculation in and showing u've thought about it may score u browny points. also u can comment how those little flanges face the directions of maximum moment, rathe than the other direction so ur trying to acheive as best u can with what u have.
The units if u use metres as distance, and force as newtons (use kg x gravity) the unit of moment will become N.m (newton metres).
if u have anymore quests, ask.
here is a wikipedia article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torquedon't get too into it tho if u haven't learnt it.
