Sennheiser.
Or if you want to go cheaper, something like AKG would do nicely.

I know HEADphones are generally better for good sound, however can anyone recommend a set of EARphones? As in those little bud things?

Headphones are just like speakers. You need to audition to find what you like. Earphones on the other hand, well they all sound like ass so it doesnt really matter.

From a dj's point of view, sennheiser all the way.
I've had the chance to compare craploads of phones from all brands, sennheiser are just the clearest, and block out the most external noise. Its the difference between being able to mix, and not being able to hear crap.

For EARphones I reccommend the Shure line-up. Absolutely awesome.
They start at around $180 for the E2c's but I love em. You might have seen musicians use em as like a personal monitor kinda thing as Shure is reknowned for musician stuff.

Had Sony EX-71s until I lost all the gaskets that fit my ear. Lasted a good 3 years and the actual phones are still good, just don't go in my ear without a gasket.
So yesterday I ordered a pair of Etymotic ER-6i. Couldn't justify the cost of the ER-4P... Hopefully they'll keep me happy on the bus to uni and on occasion in lectures

Finally got my ER-6i delivered today! Been listening all day on different sources (home amp, iPod mini, iBook) and they've been doing very nicely. Definately sound the best off the home amp (much more grunt in the guitars and such) and worst off the iBook unless EQ'd.
Need to upgrade my source and think about getting an amp.

SENNHEISER MX 350 FOR THE IRIVER.
SOUND FANTASTIC!
Previsouly had a set of Phillips in-ear headphones and they sounded nice, though the cable broke at the ear piece from old age and abuse lol

I am currently using Sony MDR-NC50's (yes the noise cancelling ones) and no I cannot recommend them. I had the MDR-NC20's before these, for about 4-5 year's and they were awesome. They made MP3's sound decent and well recorded stuff was fantastic. But someone pulled one of the wires out, so I though it was time to replace them with the NC50. Big mistake! These are around $120 more expensive than the NC20 at $500, but they simply don't sound as good. I'm sure they are more effective at the noise cancelling function however.
Why I wouldn't recommend them however, has to do with the 'howling' that I get with the noise cancelling switched on. It sounds a lot like reverb, and can usually take a couple of minutes to settle down. I am not the only one, as there are reports all over the net about this problem. Bummer.
