im thinking about upgrading the apillar to have a set of 4" phass alnico splitsand ditching the tn52's and using the 2x 6" drivers off a 165 k3p set as misbasses, all for the front stage, any opinions recommendations????
Fudd
the phass are a nice sounding speaker, paper cones too smile.gif

i listen to a set in MrBob's car when he was competing in CAASQ. very sweet speaker.
Ferry
I'm using one atm, for my midbass 6.5" runned by Phass AP 4.65i. They sound fantastic I love them, they pretty much suit my taste biggrin.gif

The midbass is punchy (I was shocked and kinda worry that it would break in a short time, then I had a talk with MrBob and he said it is fairly punchy so yeah phewww), very clear and clean sound quality produced and doesnt require much power, the amp is set down low at about 1/4 and freq +/- 80Hz ~ 100Hz.

I'd say its WORTH to buy for an upgrade good.gif

I think MrBob try to sell his (couple of months ago)..I dunno if its still up for sale, better to give him pm and ask more about the 4" u wanted.
HooDs
Yeah next comp listen to Ferrys Camry Andrew, its a nice sounding little system I must say.

Was a big shock getting something of such high quality in novice a few rounds ago. smile.gif

If you end up ditching the TN52's and parting with them, I may be interested changing my TN47's smile.gif
Reza
Well maybe ferry should point out that in order for his splits to sound that nice, he need to make one modification to the crossover unit. You won't believe how it sound before the modification were make.
antisven
what did he do to it??? it should work with the focal midbasses tho shoultnt it
Reza
Oh this is more to do with the tweeter side. Midbass is fine.
Ferry
Ohhh yes the Phass xovers I have is a little b*tch before we added a part to it..I was pissed coz it wasnt sound good at all (This is nothing to do with the alnico midbass btw, so dont worry). The tweets were very harsh and sharp before, I think its something to do with the freq from the xovers that being too high for the normal tweets' freq smile.gif

I dunno if all the original Phass xovers are like this, but yeah it happened to me, brand new from the package and sounded awful. ONCE again nothing to do with the alnico midbass..they awesome wink.gif

Ferry, what did you do with your Phass? custom made passive crossover or run it active?
Reza
He just complained to the distributor and sound sweet after that smile.gif. Active?? Can't happen. Clarion don't have active x over.
heimerich
I don't know how much Alnico in Australia but it is an awesome pair of split... if you listen a lot to instrument, AT28 is THE BEST so far... however, the midbass is power hungry... it gets better when you feed them with more power...

another option is the mix between Scanspeak D29 tweeter and 5" Peerless midbass (not sure which model)...

U could say its custom made passive xovers, coz we added something to it. We added a resistor, not sure with what ohm, coz the distributor added in for me. As Reza said, I complained to the distributor that the tweets sound really harsh and sharp and he said something about the freq as I've mentioned above, so he asked me to send the xovers back to upgrade it alitle. Final result: We can call the system Phass now good.gif

Really?coz atm I feed them with little amount of power and they sound awesome already and they punchy too..I'm afraid if I increase the gain by say another 1/4, it will break them biggrin.gif

well the splits im looking at has the AT20 tweeter and the 4" mid with some wooden xover looking thing, whats the tunability like regarding the xover???

change the resistor only? did they change a cap to you? nea.gif how much did you pay? what freq are you playing now in tweeter and midbass?

Ahhh I see...So u r planning to buy the set?I thought u only after the 4" alnico.

The xover has 3 different positions: 0, -2 , -4 dB..I'm in -2dB atm and suit me best smile.gif

Yeah just the resistor..I paid the postage to send it back and the resistor itself. The distributor is my friend's best friend so yeah no biggy for him.

The freq on the midbass is around 90Hz, the tweets are playing in the same freq as before..its just the freq at 3,000Hz is the harsh and sharp bit from so he reduced it by adding a resistor biggrin.gif
