Full Version: Formshield as Sound Dampener?

10mm Adhesive foam with foil facing. Saw some of this at my local Clarkes Rubber for about $22 per metre. Has anyone used it as a dampening material and had sucess with it. I Googled some stats on the stuff below.

one of the stats were Noise Reduction:200Hz : 3.0dB400Hz : 4.0dB.

is that comparable to anything like Dynamat or roadkill etc?

Dynamat is primarily a mass damper, this foam would me more usefull driectly behind the driver to help absorb the rear wave (at least at higher frequencies), it's something you would use in addition to dynamat, not instead of it. (that said it would be better than nothing)

This stuff looks pretty good. Would it be similar to use as an alternative to carpet underlay etc to reduce road noise?

I think it would be a lot better than the standard underfelt. It comes with & without self adhesive backing.

If its the stuff I think it is, it's half decent. We installed some in my dads stock wagon (his car was damn noisy inside) and afterwards it took out a lot of roadnoise inside the cabin. I also installed some in my boot lining, which previously had a rattle sound with the sub going, and now theres almost nothing with the sub going as hard as it can be. I only had scraps for my car, so thats why theres still some sound, I didnt have enough to completely do the full boot, but it made a huge difference.

So I think its decent, and its only $22 a metre, so its a lot cheaper then dynamat or anything, obviously not as high quality, but theres nothing wrong with it IMO

pretty sure 'Bruza' used it...

check the 'your rides/installs' section for his ride and talk to him about it...

I read thru that before posting, nothing against Bruza but even he admitted not having experience enough to compare, albeit it did manage to reduce roadnoise. I was hoping someone might be able to suggest a location it could be used where Dynamat would not be as effective eg
  • Fixed to roof skin behind roof lining to reduce heat transfer in summer as well as add density to the panel. possibly fixed with a decent skin of Sikaflex to add to the damping effect?
  • Under carpet to reduce roadnoise & undercar heat transfer. There's usually a decent amount of rubber , underfelt & tar based deadener there already so not sure of the effectiveness of this.
Thoughts anyone?

not too sure there mate...

however in my car i have the 10-12mm felt sorta stuff, that looks purply and looks like a sh!tload of crap has been mashed together, under my carpet and it reduces road noise pretty well i reckon...

will work out cheaper than the formsheild i dare say.

sorry tho, i cant comment on the formsheilds performance... sad.gif

i dont see why dynamat wouldnt be as effective on the roof. It'd certainely attenuate the higher frequencies you'd get from rain hitting a tinny roof.

I'm actually more concerned with it letting go quid, our summers get pretty hot and the wagon spends all day in the sun at work. 40º + some days. I'm looking at the dual purposeness of the Formshield as an insulation as well as sound dampener.
