Full Version: Tape deck with pre-outs

Does anyone still make cassette players with RCA pre-outs? I want to make use of all the tapes I still have and plug into the auxilary on my CD player.

On the other hand what's the SQ like on a tape? If there's a big difference between tape and CD (or MP3) it would be a waste of time.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

why dont you burn your tapes to CD quality , its gotta be easier when you are driving?.........zion
EDIT#alpine have a tape deck front/rear preout model#

the sq on tape decks....it isnt realy that good...lol....bit crackly etc etc

Tapes are generally considered some of the worst sound quality, you basically can't get them anymore as you know. They were handy before CD's became affordable as a portable means of playing audio but they are pretty much redundant the SQ is awful. Most MP3's would be alot better.

Yeah its been about ten years since I've heard a cassette player in a car and never heard a back-to-back comparison with a CD player.

I don't think I have the software necessarry to record onto CD and there's a lot of tapes. So I might just buy the stuff I like the most on CD.

Thanks for the replies.

I wouldnt go so far as saying tapes are the worst for SQ....

My uncle has a 2.5k Tape deck with Aluminium tapes, and the sound can easily compete with his turntable. Both are way better then most CD's Ive heard....

Analogue FTW!!

You will find most companies still produce cassette players.
You may have to go into a specialist audio store and ask them to get you one in though, as I doubt very many retailers would have many (if any) in stock, as they would be a very minute portion of their sales.

also x2. the best ever recording i've ever heard was a master of jazz at the pawnshop played through a tascam reel-to-real tape. made cd's (and even vinyl) sound completely backwards. after all most of these old recordings were originally captured on tape for mastering

however, will i ever go back to the humble cassette.... ? erm... no.

Ah certainly, when he was talking about tapes I am guessing he was refering to your garden variety cassette smile.gif

Yeah reel to reel and master tapes are top notch but a cassette, how wide is the tape about 3 millimetres? AND thats split into 4. How you get much SQ out of a skinny piece of tape I don't know.

Anyway I might go ahead with the idea just to make use of the tapes and its not like I will only have the tape deck.

I got the idea reading what DAMON said about feeding a P80RS into a HX-D2. I don't have an ipod but I've got heaps of tapes. As long as the deck has pre-outs it should be alright.

The only problem is when I install the HX-D2 I'll wanna keep the 9847 to play MP3s and I don't know where I'm gonna put all these farkin decks!

judging by your avatar and wanting a casette player i'd say your car is an 80s commodore or falcon?

i like casette tapes though and they can sound ok if you use the high inputs and amp them through decent speakers.

Cant buy blank cassettes anymore? Ummm I think not. Go into any JB Hifi and they still have stock. Tape will still be around for a long long time to come. Just because its an outdated format dont mean its dead.

I still use my Yammy KX-390 hifi tape deck to record radio broadcasts every so often. Made great use of it when the Triple J live music festival was on.

isnt that infringing copyright laws? i dont mean to have a go im just curious. technically u cant tape the tv either right?
~thematt~
IIRC your not allowed to profit from it, not tape it. Same as with MP3's. Its not illegal to have them, just the share them or profit from them.

Yeah, the law was released this year i guess, without it, a lot of people are criminal biggrin.gif.

Sorry mate no cigar but I did have Falcons in the past, see picture

To explain the username. I used to go dirt bike riding and I would have Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath or AC/DC going round in my head when I was out there caning it. So I suppose you could say I like music that comes-on like the powerband on a CR500 but of course there's a double meaning.

Well that was a long time ago so no more "Beating Around The Bush"

I've installed the Clarion now next to the Alpine but it looks 'untidy' and its giving me a split personality. I don't know if I'm an "Alpine man" or a "Clarion man" (lol)

I only recently discovered the benefits of MP3s and fitting SEVEN ENTIRE ALBUMS onto one disc made me want to keep the Alpine. But I've heard some skips in the recordings, so that's no good, and because I don't like the look of two decks on the dash it will have to go.

This also puts doubt into the idea of having a tape deck unless there's one that looks similar to the HX-D2. (Gee, for a heavy-metal dude, I am so fussy!)

Heh, wait till you get a DVD headunit....36 albums and about 100 singles on one disc, and it still isn't full!

Thanks for that, Gee their not expensive are they?
I'm wondering if it can control a CD/MP3 changer but something else has caught my attention

In the Clarion catalogue it mentions a DVD changer on page 33. It says it can be controlled by the HX-D2 but I can't find it anywhere in the catalogue or on the net. Does anybody know anything about it?

thanks

T = Tape
D = Headunit
M = M-Bus stacker control

So yeah, you can hook a CD stacker to it, just make sure its an M-Bus unit, not AiNET.

If you can find a TDA (Tape Headunit AiNET) unit, then you can use an AiNET stacker that supports Mp3.. or DVD wink.gif not to mention those nifty AiNET processors.
