hi guys,

this is my first product review, so bear with me....

the subject is the cal27 from the lovely chocolate eating, german dudes from rainbow...

BUILD QUALITY: the tweeters are wrapped in an attractive alloy casing, that has a nice and smooth powder coat feel to them... overall built very very well, with two fly leads coming out of the bottom of the tweeter for a direct connection in DD style... the grill and casing feel near indestuctable... on the rainbow website, they look a little small, dont be fooled, these are massive tweeters, almost two and a half inches across... all in all they are built very impressivley, like a brick crap house, just better looking...

PERFORMANCE: i hadnt heard these tweeters when i bought them, but had talked to a few people who had, so i took a punt... after letting them break in for about two weeks, they have opened up to be quite a nice tweeter, they are very soft, very detailed, and are still a little bright, but im hoping this will change as they wear...

from how people describe rainbow products as soft, i almost expected them to be boring, too soft almost, but after hearing them, they are quite livley and enjoyable,

guitars come through very detailed and soft, but still very natural, female vocals, and some male vocals, show a bit of sybilince, but things like piano's sound great, and trumpets sound real and very enjoyable, trumpets sound to me as annoying as they do in real life, so i guess thats a good thing... these tweeters are very smooth, and while may not win you SQ comps, (which im sure they could) are for me, first and foremost for enjoyment, they are just so pleasurable to listen too....

the usable frequency from rainbow is said to be 1600hz and up, but i have mine crossed over at 2400hz at 18db

CONCLUSION: these tweeters set me back 400 odd dollars, but have really been a good buy, as iv said, quite lively and detailed, while being smooth and soft at the same time...

so if thats what your after from a tweeter, do your self a favour, and try this one....

thanks guys,

Gotta agree with all of your comments on the buld quality. Rainbow tweets are extremely impressive in that respect.

I'll tell you now, if you think those babies are unexpectedly large and well built you should have a look at the platinums. Had the privalege of holding and hearing a pair of those tweets myself - they weight a ton! Considerably larger, heavier and more solid then the Powers (which themselves are tanks!).

Similar sounding but silker, more detailed, and sweeter. Vocals just make your skin crawl!

As for the sounds of the power tweets, very surprised to hear a person call them called bright! Just wondering how you are running them, passive or active? Have you tried attenuating them at all?

I've found them to be one of the softer tweets I've heard smile.gif

All the best with those anyways, hope you enjoy them as much as I have mine !

Just to help out caydin, here's a couple of piccies!

First couple of pics are of the CAL27 tweeter (no rear shots, sorry).

Next shot is of the CAL26 Profi tweeter just for size comparisons.

Next couple of shots are of the behemoth W175 Power mid-bass as it dwarf's a Response 6" coaxial (75mm depth from memory).

Final shot is of the equally huge and impressive crossover from the Power line.

i thought the power series midbass (7") had a 96mm mounting depth?

nice review there dude.. well written..
i heard a 3 way set with the profi vinadium tweeter and midrange, and power series midbass.. active off 2 TRU amps (2.200 & 4.100) and the sound was just unreal.. very clean and crisp.. not to mention loud!

yeah muzz,

at higher volumes, they can get a bit bright,

that was when i first got them though, a few weeks in, and they are absolutely flawless...
