Has anyone heard any of JL's speaker sets? I have had no luck finding any reviews onine, but I have heard some good things about their ZR series. Anyways, I am debating between the JL ZR650-csi and Dynaudio 240GT.

ummm, dyn. if ur able to afford to consider dyn, go dyn. period.
jl simply arent in the same league
MADTRAV
the JL's would be brighter than the Dyns.... go where ears say
thesubtledagger
The last thing I want is brither speakers... the Focal's I have currently seem to 'scream' and hurt my ears. (165k2p) I'm sure the Dyn's will be better, but I'm still a bit curious about the JL's sound quality.

just a question, both spyne and madtrav are both quite knowledgable,

but have either of you heard the jl???

if not, for all you know, they could be the greatest sounding speakers ever, i mean not up to about a few months ago, noone knew or cared about rainbow, now everyone seems to be riding the wagon (including myself)...

these jls may not be the flavour of the month, but from an calculated guess, id say, judging by how amazing the $350 jls sound, and how good thier subs sound, id reckon they would have put alot of time and effort into the coil magnet spider setup, and plus the cone of the woofer is similar to that of dyn morel as well...

dont write them off cos noone has heard them, and dont assume they are bright cos they are metal domes...

those who follow the crowd, also fall short where the crowd may, take a punt, im sure youl be pleased...

p.s, jl havent revamped thier slash series amps in about 10 years, thier w7's and w6s are also getting quite old, as are there speaker lines,

they dont play games, they do massive r+d, then release a product that isnt just a fad for a few months, but can keap its own for years...

i could keep going??!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

my mistake, i actually read it as the VR series.
in that case, disregard my opinion, i have not heard, or even seen the ZR series.

Heard these a few weeks ago in a full JL car. They do have a distinctive sound, and their top end is very bright. Not focal piercing, but more clarity then Dyn. Unfortunately, the midbass is a loser. For that sort of money, there isnt much on the market that can hold up against the Dyn. Focal midbasses are really nice, but I cant go past their tweeters.

JL is the sort of company that builds equipment to a particular taste. Their subs, to me, sound $hite. Absolutely revolting. They make me queesy. But I know people who swear by them. Same goes for the splits.

Id go so far as to say, there is nothing else really on the market with the distinctive tone of the JL's. Not that I have heard anyway. It really comes down to your ears.

exactly...

personally, i think the W7 is THE best sounding sub iv heard...

and although i love the dyn sound extremely, it comes down to preference and what YOu like,

i wouldnt buy one withou hearing the other

The design that has gone into the ZR splits is huge, They use one of the most advanced crossovers iv ever seen, with seperate autentuation for mid and tweeters, As for lacking midbass it could be the placement and or tuning.
I have a set of 5 1/4 in xr's in the kick panels and they just keep sounding better with age with mad midbass and sweet high's . I just got myself a pair of the ZR650's and should have them installed in a few days, if you like you are more than welcome to come listen to them in sydney..

jl pioneered what focal now call theyre crossblock, adjuctable caps and such..

What about some DLS if you find Focals to harsh but Dyn unnaturaly laid back especially in the top end like I did then DLS are definitely worth a listen. Though they do need there run in period cause they can sound pretty brittle without there run in period. I think you could get some UP36's or UR6's in a similar price range to the 240GT's.

As to your original choice having never heard the JL's I'd go the Dyn's but I can't talk cause I bought my DLS having never heard a single DLS item. I went on reputation alone but I wasn't dissapointed so I'm happy!!!!

once again no one has asked him wat music he listens too?

i run Boston Accoustic's and swear by them! for the music i listen too, ie dance, R&B Hip Hop. Which is what they are suited to playing.

on the other hand if i listened to Jazz Classical etc etc I would of left the Boston's and got a set of Dyn's or Rainbows.

if you listen to Dance music etc the JL's would be suited to u more..

if you listen to Jazz etc the Dyns would be suited to u more..

my first set of component speakers were a set of JL VR600-CSI for a mint from JB HiFi in brisbane.

I was running them on an apline amplifier putting out 60watt rms (as per their rating) and after 3 months blew the tweeters from listening to war of the worlds (not into clipping either).

Then i purchased dynaudio MKII 5 3/4 Splits which are rrp $999
Then i purchased some peerless definition splits for $300, used the dynaudio MD100 Tweeter with the 6.5" Definition woofer and love the sound.

You can pickup some Dynaudio MD100 tweeters aroudn the $150-200 mark second hand. I would recommend that and some good mid-bass woofers
iv only heard good things about boston acoustics and rainbows.

I disaggree about the jl's more suited to dance and the dyns more suited to jazz, yes the dyns are suited to jazz but will outperform the JL's hands down on all types of music. But for more than double the price you should hope so.

I'm a die hard dynaudio fan and will always support them. I use them for my home system aswel.
