Hey kids,
Just looking for some ideas for a 6"-7" midbass driver.
Driver will be installed into a very deadened door of a VY commodore.
Requirements:
*Good Low end extension (hoping for something down to 30-40Hz area)
*Fast attack/punchy/powerful midbass kick
*Excellent SQ for 30-300Hz
Currently thinking about: Morel Supremo, Oz Audio Elite Mids, Boston Pro and ImageDynamics 8", but would definitely like to hear others' opinions.
Peace
Ice

You have heard my RF woofers in my doors, what did you think of them??

My vote is for the Boston Pro's I've only heard them on a demo board but I can say I initially thought the sub was still on and had to check.

Teg> I actually havent had a chance to hear ur car

I must do that next meet, regardless if I'm still looking for woofers.
Luk> Cheers. I agree.. Ive heard them on a board too, and they are quite 'strong'.

X2 on the RF woofers... I dunno what their Xmax is, but damn! they look the goods when they get pumpin!!!
I'd like to say that my Z6's are good at pumping bass, but alas they aren't that low in the extension range... unless you set the EQ to SQ2, Which lowers their WRMS, and I still doubt they would get down to a useable 30 hz, but they do give you a nasty snap to the chest (80-300hz range, especially with acoustic snare hits) when they get moving. Having said that, I have to inject them with around 300WRMS each to get them to do it..

How much space do you have?
I know a driver that would fullfil your every need, but as a result it's bloody big.
Rainbow W175 Power - i.e. the midbass unit I'm currently running. Here is a link:
http://car.rainbow-audio.de/products/intro...pro=1&lin=5These play low, and hit hard. They are also from a two way SQ component set, so I can guarantee you they will play smoothly and detailed well beyond 400hz.
Only downside, is i'm not 100% sure of how much they cost, of if they are available as a seperate driver (or only as a set) - oh and of coruse the depth issue.
Your best bet would be to contact a local Rainbow dealer (if there is one) and go from there.
When I tested the woofers in my cars once, I had the crossover running at 65hz or so. I lowered it to the lowest possible (around 50hz) and they just kept doing down, down, down.
I disabled the crossover entirely and ran them full range, and the difference was immediately noticable, so I can confirm they definately play down to 50hz and below with no trouble at all. How far below I haven't been able to measure, but I will comment more when my installation is complete and they are properly insttalled and set up.
Personally, i'd be very surprised of there is much out under 8" there that can compare. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if to hear these out play some larger 8" and 9" midbass drivers - they really do have a LOT of balls.

Muzzy> Cheers... I had thought about that... might have to look into it a little more. Have you heard that driver compared to any of the others on my list? Can you compare?
Space wise, I used to have a 93mm driver in there.. so its gonna come very close!

If you go onto the DLS website they have what they call the RW6 sub kit comes with two 6.5" subs admittadely they would need an enclosure but only about 8-9litres which shouldn't be excessively hard to do in your door. Should work as a great midbass I'd think, maybe email the guys at DLS over in Sweden apparently there great to deal with.
Here's what they say about it:
The RW6 subwoofer kit comes with two 6,5" drivers, a 3" , 24 cm long, bass port and instructions for building an enclosure. The recommened enclosure for these drivers is only 18 liter so it can easily fit into any vehicle. Recommendations for other enclosure types is also included. Combined with a suitable amplifier this box creates a controlled and deep bass sound, more than enough for most bass lovers.
Speaker type : Subwoofer kit with 2x 6,5" woofers and 3" bass port
Impedance : 4 ohm
Woofer size : 6,5" (16,5 cm)
Power handling : 100 W RMS / 200 W max
Frequency range : 30-4000 Hz
Sensitivity : 87 dB (1W/1m)
Magnet size : 110 mm (4,33")
Outer diameter : 165 mm (6,5")
Installation depth : 84 mm ( 3,3")
Mounting hole : 140 mm (5,5")
Weight : 2 kg (4,6 lb
Parameters: Qts: 0,45 Fs: 47 Hz Vas: 12,2 l (0,43 cuft)
Recommended vented box : Volume 18 litres. Port: 3" diameter, 20 cm long

The attached manual is in Swede I assume, but you can understand the basics.

the oz's are great mid-bass speakers, but i really dont know if they are capable of giving anything 'special' much below 40hz. it could just be me being too scared to pump them with the hpf set that low, but there are few 6.5" speakers i would be happy to run that low...
DD W6.5LT and rainbow power would be two, and possibly the boston pro.

The W6.5 is a derivitive of the 6.5 that Jassa started making over 20 years ago for the studio monitors that got his company started.
They have been tweaked and tweaked over two decades, I love them.
Brad at Car Tunez just got his 6.5LTs in. He was impressing everyone at the shop yesterday by playing 20Hz sweeps through the front doors.

I have my doors heavily deadened and the service holes are sealed, but there are still some air leaks (window gap, drain holes, locking rod opening etc).
Enclosures are not an option for me unfortunately.

he's selling his Elate 9's to go with smaller drivers BECAUSE he doesnt want to modify

Exactly.
As Woob said, I already have Elate 9"s, which sound fantastic in a box and I would love to put them in the doors, but they just wont fit without a serious hackjob.

Just to give you an idea of the size of the Rainbow driver, here is an image.
The second speaker is a 6.5" Response coaxial from Jaycar, which from memory has a mounting depth of around 75mm.
Gives an indication of the relative depth and diameter of the Rainbow in comparison to an average 6.5" mid-bass driver. May given an indication of the type of work involved in getting one in

Biggest issue for me was actually my windown windows not providing sufficient clearance, so installing the drivers required abit of modification.

What about some DLS Midbass drivers there are lots to choose from. The DLS to me, tend to have quite a thick sound to them in the midbass department, bass quitar, and double basses etc blend amazingly with my IDQ, but this is where the IDQ really shines aswell. Plus nearly all there drivers are under 65mm in mounting depth and also not very wide at the back thanks to the NEO magnets.
