Full Version: Midrange obstructions

Gordo!
G'Day,

Pretty much just wanting to know how affected midrange frequencies are by obstructions. My specific obstruction is fusebox/brake booster/steering column/wiring. The best picture I could find was this: http://www.tamon.org/gallery/d/4429-3/DSC00676.JPG

In my mind I'm comparing this to a gearbox hump but in my situation there is far less area/time for the sound to diffract. I'm worried that the obstruction will muddy the sound. I suppose it's like putting a mid behind a stock car grill (plastic door trim type grill)? Although my 'grill' is slightly more complex.

Thanks for reading,
Gordo

I found mine was affected by hard smooth surfaces nearby with reflections, not actually obstructions but reflections made a difference in the kickpanel area.

Interesting. If reflections are my only problem then this will be an easy one smile.gif

Obstructions, like the footwell, actually help midbass response,

from 50-300hz, after that, 300hz - 4khz, obstuctions will be detrimental to performance.

so it depends what we are talking about, are we talking a midbass thats playing midbass only or a midbass that is doubling as a midrange?

We are talking about a dedicated dome midrange.

Dome Midrange should be fired on Axis with NO obstructions.

(PS I Should have read your first post properly!)

in an ideal situation there should be no obtrusions, refractions, reflections, also be a good distance away from the speakers, but as we are working in cars, we have to make sacrifices.

I'm installing my dyn dome midranges in the kick panels facing the center of the car, the steering wheel on the right hand side will be a bit of an obstructions, but currently my tweeters are down in the kick panels and i enjoy the sound
