Hey all,
I am on the hunt for some very high end SQ sub, I have serveral in mind but been told the RE XXX is the sh!tz and I believe it is but is it a SQ sub is what I'm asking? Recently I made a bold statement saying brands/sub that are design for SPL have poor SQ comparing to a similar high end SQ because SPL has got F.A. to do with SQ and of coarse vice versa. Not saying they don't have any SQ, DD is a good example but comparing to say Diamond TDX it's not very good. Pioneer SPL woofers, I think they can take like 3000-5000wrms? Not exactly sure how much but been told it sounds like absolute sh!t which of coarse is understandable.
Still as I been researching and people/reviews are saying it is a SQ sub and been comparing to other SQ subs. I'm doubting this because these puppies can take up to 2000wrms alone! Am I wrong? Is it a SQ sub that can take alot power because theres is no doubt it can do SPL.
Cheers.

I believe the XXX was designed to be SQ sub but with the ability to play very loud and low. Much like the the JL13w7's.

Exactly right. It's a very good sub, but you'll have a lot of troubles finding one.
I believe there was a showdown awhile ago with XXX and TDX as a couple of contenders, and the TDX taking the crown. Not sure if these are easier to find, but perhaps another good option?
I've had both before (granted the TDX was only for an hour), and I prefer the XXX.
For SPL uses, I wouldn't bother. Sure, they can go fairly loud, but if you want loud you get DD. If you want something that sounds good, you get something else (like an XXX

)

I think that you will find that all the top sq subs like pg ti12d, re xxx, idmax, jlw7, tdx etc all have very large motor structures, and in order to drive them you need a crape load of power. A lot of the top end have rms ratings of 1000wrms which is fairly reflective of that. But at the same time they are designed to have large output as well while sounding good I think to appeal to a larger market. I think that part of the deal in having such a large motor structure is to keep the cone linear throughout the motion range. I could be wrong though. I wouldn't dismiss DD either, the matt iirc heard one and said it was musically fairly decent. I'm sure he'll see this and put a comment in.
Btw the XXX was regarded as a very good SQ sub, much like the brahma which seems to have gone out of fashion.
For SPL I think that the XXX's main downfall was that it was bloody inefficient and took a heap of power to get the motor moving. You'd be spending a large amount on power just to get the think to an equivalent level.

Personally I do not consider the IDMax, W7 and XXX to be SQ subs. Whilst they have high thermal dynamic limits and be "controlled," they are not purist subs. In saying that, they play low and loud, but are not as tight as other subs.

Lotus SW300 from people who have heard one they reckon probably one of the most accurate and transparent sounding subs they've heard blends beautifully apparently.
IDQ, they don't play overly low but they can play high which is just as important and there very musical, they reproduce actual instruments very nicely, bass guitar and double bass etc are there specialty, they don't sound as good playing artificial bass though, if that makes sense.

imo, the 10W6 is the best sounding sub ive heard to date, given i havent heard toooo many brilliant systems, but this is compared to G5's, Orion sq subs, ID MAX, RE SX (not really sq but yea), countless DD subs, and a few random others i cant remember atm..
while they arent ultra loud subs.. mine was still good for 139dB on an AC reading ~5dB higher than lab, in a sedan.. im after another one atm

Thanks for your input guys, I figured it was an SQ sub but I had to have somebody to tell me it is to convince myself

. As the saying goes(I think)"..if walks like a duck and if it quacks like a duck, it's a duck!"

I've got an old school jbl 1200 gti. It has been reconed. I believe it is a sq sub. In a sealed box its response is almost ruler flat. frequency range is from 20-300hz. Its bassically a pa sub. 93db/m/w. 4' voicecoil. 600w rms. It's worth getting your hands on. I have it in a vented 70 lt box. It is very tight and punchy.

Best sounding sub I've heard was Dynaudio MW-180. Magic sound, fast, tight, musical, punchy. Doesn't go very loud though, and most everybody who thinks they want SQ, really wants SQL.

PM Mr_Bob (Ben) about this as he has the only XXX in the country for sale at the moment. Mind you it is only a 10" but it still gets right down into the 20 Hertz range

If you can't snag that sub, then you will be waiting a while as there is no importer for RE anymore so you will have to do all the legwork to get the new series in yourself. The pricing of the new subs is also vastly different to the previous series from the reports I have heard.
If you are truly interested in getting one in, Paul's Audio in NZ I am pretty sure have distribution rights and the right contacts to make it happen.

Indigo Audio in NZ too

I'm getting mine through them.
trism actually bought the last '05 XXX that RE had in stock.
'06 XXX's can be had if you're willing to wait and pay for the shipping to get one here from NZ. From what I've heard, they s*** all over W7's

Good to see you Henry!
Its a form of programming

No seriously - apparantly some people's concotion of having a sound quality setup that also competes in SPL...or something I'm not really sure.

That quote has been on your posts for years - but it doesn't change the fact that it is gold and it flies in the face of what many people would like to believe!!!

I only heard a XXX once and it was a long time ago. At the time though, I thought it sounded great - but at the time I was just a beginner and probably not the best judge. I wouldn't mind one though

I've got no doubts that There is no doubt to me that a sub can have high output and power handling, and still sound excellent. I think the IDMAX is evidence of this.
