Full Version: Hitting a brickwall choosing $400-500 splits

Ok, I know this has been asked many times, beleave me i've read them all trying to workout a set of splits around the $450 mark. I'll give as much infor as i can to narrow it down.

At first I was going focal, then Morel, then boston now hertz, It's realy sending me loopy!

*The install is for a 98 Nissan navara 4x4

*I listen to heaps of 80's stuff like Foreigner, Mister Mr, and lead guitar stuff like Steve Vai, Satriani.

*I'd like the splits to be 6.5s The holes are for 6 inch speckers so i'll need spacers.

*I listen to music at the levels that don't send ya deaf! So SQ is far more inportant.

*I probably won't go with a sub being a single cab, so the splits must have oomf. Though the options there later.

*I will be sound insulating as much as possible.

*I'm going for an alpine 9856i for a HU and will probably get an Audison LRX 2.150 early next year for the splits.

So out of The Focals, Hertz, Boston, Morel, MB Qaurt, Alpine. Which set of 6.5 splits around $450 will best suit the music and the budget?

any coments or recomendations?

ld go morel or boston
~Sparkles~
Bostons or the Hertz would get my vote without a sub probably tending more towards the Hertz

do You's mean
hertz HSK-165,
Morel Pulse?
Boston SL 60? .
~Spyne~
hertz hsk, boston sl, focal v1, dd, eton

I was kinda hoping someone would say. --- is best for such and such music.
Guess it's pretty impossible to define the differnce in sound.

So far it's 2 votes for boston sl60, I've read somewhere there a good alrounder?
Also
Morel pulse = warm sounding
Hertz HSK 165 = great midpass but harsh highs.

Isn't the Morel Pulse Coax and not splits
trism
you need to audition them, while playing yor music...

I wish I could, but i'm in far far nth qld. (Yeh one of those) sad.gif
hence the 4x4

i just bought a pair of JL VR600-CSIs for my car.

Im primarily and SPL nutter so i was after splits that sounded great for daily music play, but could also withstand a full blast hit when in comp.

nice crisp clear sounds and can deal bass when its wanted.

I've been checking out the websites and i noticed that the morel ovation hybrid 6 had promising specs, Has anyone heard these speackers yet. and how they compare to the hertz hsk165, bostons, mb's, focal 165v2.

they have the soft dome tweeters, and seem to have a pretty widish freqency response.

I auditioned focal V1, V2s, soundstream, jvc and a few others in this bracket a few weeks ago. By far for my ears the focal V2s splits kicked the rests butts. I listen to tons of different music and i took my own cd in. I also got the focal V2s for $399 as well, a very nice deal from Rock Lock & Roll in Ballarat. Also, if you are having issues with depth, get some good prefab door pods. You can get these nice and cheap these days. Auto barn had some decent ones for $45 a set with either black or grey vinyl. I hope this helps you mate, I know what its like living in the middle of nowhere.... good luck!

i can vouch for hertz having good midbass and slightly harsh highs....but if you have some way of tuning you should be fine

It certainly isn't easy picking splits, after reading thru threads, replies and articles, bearing in mind the music i'm listening to and the car it's going into and most likely without a sub, i'm leaning towards the hertz.
Only They are pretty cheap so surely there are some compromises. in regrads to the highs, anyone ever tried using a soft dome tweeter with the hertz?

[Hypatheticaly]
If i bought subs i'd be leaning on the morels for splits, also focal v2's but i remeber reading somewhere the focals can also be a bit harsh with the highs?
atm i'm researching sub design, placemeant, drivers, to figire out away I could have a sub box behind the seat. Thinking i don't want the hole town to hear the sub louder then I would sitting directly infront. so the subs another option though it wouldn't be till next year that i bought a sub and amp. It's hypathetical but I'd be a fool not to check it out first.

Thanks everyone for the replies so far!
I'm taking in everybit of info you fullas throw at me,

Ive hit the same brick wall sad.gif and been over n over Boston, Focals, Hertz, Morels...??? I was only fortunate to have demo'ed the Hertz n Focals & only on a demo board, not many stores in my area stock these brands. But from this i managed to determine that the Hertz were more my taste. Mind u my taste in music is a lil different - mainly trance, vocal trance, drum n bass, electronica, some Hip Hop n vocal classics. I found the Focals to be a lil rich on the highs n bit fatiguing altho they produce much clearer highs. Hertz were better on their mids, i couldn't believe the difference in the speakers tho, talking ones in the same price bracket ie. V1 & V2's vs HSK 165.

At the mo im down to deciding between the Hertz HSK 165 or 163 or the Morel Hybrids 6's. I was really keen on the Morels initially as ive heard so much good things about them & how they sound very natiral but i think the Hertz would suit me more for the type of music i listen to. Also for the price of the Hybrid 6's i can get the Hertz HSK-163 3 ways which i think may help produce a clearer mid. Feel free to correct me anyone.

Only thing is finding room for the xtra mid now. May have to make a pod for it to fit 2 speakers on the doors.

Matrix,
i'll be very interested in yout opinion if you ever get to hear the morel hybrids next to the hertz, I've also narrowed it down to the same 2 sets of splits.

So would i laugh.gif but i doubt ill get that opportunity. Ive been into numerous audio shops in Perth n none stocks the Morels, let alone have them on a demo board. They can order a pair in but only if u want to buy em. Which amp(rating) r u planning to run them off? I think the Morels Hybrids rated at 100WRMS will be better off running off a better quality amp, something like a LRx, not that it wont perform or impress with something smaller but it will just perform better with a bigger high quality amp.

Im also having the same dilemma with my sub now, Boston G212 or Focal 33V1 or V2 or Hertz HX300D? Leaning towards the Boston as ive heard plenty of good things about the 512 series, if the 212 is similar it should impress, that n i was thinking of reverse mounting the sub n the Boston has the better looking basket design.

Buggar about not been able to hear morels against the hertz, Would have made life so much easier!
I feel like i'm nearly there regarding these splits, and i'm not changing my mind now after all the looping around so far.

Is there anyone out there that has heard the morel hybrid 6's next to hertz hsk165's??????

As for an amp i'm going for the Audison LRX 2.150 for the splits,
As for a sub i'm still figuring out if i should get one and if i did, how i would get it in there.
My problem is with a cab im pretty much sitting on it. So most likely id hear little, where as outside it'll be 10 on the richter scale. I don't want it to be earth quaking, just that it compliments the splits for the most realistic sound.
I wish i could make a car sterio system sound to my ears like my koss portapro headphones.
