The mighty Boston SPG555 is finally here in Australia and we have one here for evaluation and testing. With its fully interchangable motor and an excursion measuring nearly
four inches, it's bound to make quite an inpact on Australia listeners.

Some of the finer details are:
* 555 cm squared of surface area.
* 3.8 inches of peak-to-peak excursion.
* 3.25" voice-coil.
* Radialvent® cooling technology.
* Only 26 Lbs! Thanks to Neodymium Lightweight design.
* RVC™ (Removable Voice Coil) allows coil to be exchanged without removing the woofer from the enclosure.
* SPS™ (Soft Part System) removable assembly enables field repair of the cone/surround/spider assembly.
* Can be field-stripped and custom painted, powder-coated, or plated.
* Work in multiple enclosures, both sealed and ported.
* Integral sealing gaskets simplify both standard and inverted mounting.
* Available in 4-ohm and 2-ohm versions.

is it a full house 6x9? what are its dimensions? WOW i can see this being use for SPL making re-cone-ing a thing of the past!

Dec 24 2006, 05:52 PM
Outside dimensions are 362x302mm. So no, not quite 6x9 in size

It has more cone surface area than a 12" sub apparently.

I saw a proto-type at Las Vegas in 2004 and a further developed model in Sensheim in Germany 05 and it was awsome.
Funny how long it takes things to get here from initial release / display to final production.

It's actually Luke352 here I can't be bothered changing log-in's, I've read a few things on an American forum a particular person on one reckons it is one of best sounding subs he's heard (he is no stranger to high end gear either) mind you for $1400 odd it would want to be nice.

I have to be honest and say I wasn't expecting a great deal of SQ and control from this subwoofer. I was under the impression it was more about SPL when they designed the 555. Almost like a G5 on steroids...
Well how wrong was I?
In a sealed 1.1 cf enclosure it actually sounds better than the G5 during fast double bass drumming (e.g. Fear Factory and Screams of Chaos) and even in this enclosure (you could probably go a little larger) it plays really deep and while remaining controlled. For example when I put on Chopin and Vivaldi the pipe organ, cello and basson notes are reproduced with very little loss of control. I'm guessing this is due to the suspension design holding everything tight even during the larger excursions required when playing subsonic notes such as 18-30Hz.
Two down sides are:
1. It needs 1000 watts on tap to get it moving cleanly.
2. Obviously once you have made the box you're stuffed because the cutout hole will not suit anything else.
However, all in all they're one very nice subwoofer and it is here for anyone if they wish to put it in their car and have a lash. Boston are well known for making SQ subwoofers but have always been a little lacking in the SPL department. They moved a step closer to being seriously competitive with the G5 but now the 555 is here, I think Boston has finally arrived at the SPL mark (so to speak).

Why have they gone to that shape sub? Is it so you can fit more into the same area as conventional subs? I'd think so since there is a lot of wasted space between subs if they are circular.

In any case; the 555 is one very impressive subwoofer and no matter where you hear it; you're sure to be impressed. We're still cranking ours here for the magazine review.

Sorry Marty,
I didn't mean for my comments to come across as advocating or promoting of any stores. I was simply sharing my Car Audio experience with fellow CAA Members (in Melbourne mostly) who might be keen to take a listen to the Sub in a practical setup, & advise who was carrying out my install.
I saw this as a 'discussion' thread, so I threw my comments in.
If any of my above-mentioned comments are inappropriate, I do apologise.

wahhh woah wee woooooo
thats a pretty penny for a subwoofer.....
im just wanting to know if this leans more towards the SPL department or the SQ department, because i dont think people are going to want to spend that much on a sub that does half of both, now dont get me wrong im not saying it does, but from the comments made thats the impression i am getting lol
so im just curious, which is it? SPL or SQ?
also it looks like a very awsome sub cant wait to hear one

In Marty's brief review, he mentions that the SPG555 sounds more accurate than a Boston G5 with tests he has carried out so far...Pretty positive re-enforcement for SQ I'd say...
Being the G5 is renowned as being 'up there' in terms of Top SQ Subs, I would think this could be a SERIOUS KICK ASS SQ Sub with 1,000rms of SPL...
Having had the pleasure of hearing a Boston G5 myself many times (with passive radiator) in my mates 'Mediocre Quality Install' -(no deadening, no tuning, 1.0cft sealed box, off 900rms) I think the G5 is the most impressive Sub I've heard to date in terms of accuracy, responsiveness, and overall sound quality.. (and I've heard a few eg: Idmax, Type R, Eclipse 91XX Series, etc)
This is just my opinion & my experiences, take it as you wish...
Cheers

Like I said, I've had quite a bit of experience with the G5. Not only in customers cars but also in one of our competition cars that cleaned up in CAASQ the year before last.
I was quite surprised to hear just how acurate the 555 is. It's a shame about the shape but you cannot argue with the sound output.
We had a few people here today chucking the enclosure containing the 555 into their car for testing and the results appear to be the same no matter who you ask; the 555 is one very hard hitting subwoofer (with the right amount of power) that sounds fantastic doing so too!:D
Like I stated before, anybody is welcome to come down and have a try of it. After all; that is why we have it here.

Maybe on the 24th Stooge
I had a listen to one in a car (which may be competing at CAASQ Vic round 1) Very nice sub. Mechanical transfer works brilliantly with this sub (like most Boston subs). But its got the balls to back it up when needed too. Certainly could give many other subs a run for their money in terms of output SPL

In all honesty 1point21gigawatts I've demo'd quite extencively Toms SPG555 with a range of genres ranging from jazz, blues, metal, pop, rap and hip hop and I found that the sub performs well (as should all subs) with all genres that I've thrown at it. Its loud enough to be deafening but controlled enough to blend well. I'd buy one if i needed a new sub. Definately got more than a G5 has and I would put it up there with what I classify as a good sub - the Focal K / KX series.
Its a very elegant yet menacing looking sub - I was very supprised by the weight when I lifted it concidering the motor structure!
Beign that its a Boston I have no doubts what so ever that in 10-15 years time this sub will still be going as strong as ever and sounding just as good if not better than it did brand new. Thats something that to me justifies that kind of money for a sub. You cant buy a proven long term reputation.
This sub is a true automotive based SQ/SPL subwoofer. Mechanical transfer is fantastic yet controlled. In all honesty one of the top 5 subs I've heard.

Noice, some really good reviews on the Boston SPG555, can't go worng with Boston period.
Komodo, just out of interest, what are the top 5 best sounding subs according to you:
~Sparkles~
Mar 27 2007, 12:05 PM
Subs that I personally have heard and I like :
IDMAX (in a good box other wise they sound like a$$)
Focal K series (Possibly my favorite subs ever - its a focal thing

)
Boston G5 (only heard in a sealed enclosure at this stage)
PG X-Max (Very nice subs unfortunately Ive never heard them given a really hard time so a little hesitant to be to impressed)
Alpine ZR (just a fun loving sub IMO)
Oz ME (Nice everyday sub but can become a little dull and "rounded" (for lack of a better word) or "thick" at low levels IMO)
Havent yet heard a DD that I've liked setup properly for SQ. But that maybe just box design issues as they do seem to get reasonable reviews.
that list is in no particular order
1point21gigawatts
Mar 27 2007, 02:11 PM
Thanks Komodo, thats pretty handy to know, I think i'll bite the bullet and go for the SPG555 (after a listen to be certain

)
I think the Boston is exactly what I'm looking for, especially when the way I have been told it performs in such little space 1.1cuft.
