hey guys, i installed my neons the other day, now i'm just wondering what the law is in perth. I have herd that neons are legal if you cannot see the light source. if this is the case, im safe. But then i've herd there is some kind of permit, is this true? oh yeah btw, my neons are able to flash, but i can only get pinned if the police see my neons flash ay?

It is LEGAL to have undercar neons illuminated when:
A: Cannot see light source
B: Dont change colour or pulse
C: Wired correctly.
Some cops may give you hass but the law says they ARE LEGAL, so be polite and don't sweat if they do.

ok, so what if the police are curious about whether they flash or not. Are they allowed to search your car for a "control panel" or somthing? and what do you mean by wired correctly?

As most packets state "for off-road use only" or showcar. The ability to manipulate the light... i dont think there is a law against it but yah, don't use it while the car is in motion.
And for wiring, if a cop want to get nasty he can "ping" you for anything his heart desires, just ensure the cables are insulated and cable tied proparly away from moving parts and heat effected areas.

and 'cant see light source' includes being able to see it off reflective surfaces

if they are a real ass they could walk around your ar until they found a way to see the neon inside the lip of a chrome rim and ping you for that

basically coppers can pin you for anything if they like... my mate was being a bit of an asse in his car by speeding and taking off the line realy quickly.... by not having a speedo thing they couldnt actually do him for anything so they yellow stickered his car and said that there was no battery clamp which there clearly was... at the end of the day its just your word against theres
so be nice to the cop and hope they let you off... i have under body neons which are i didnt realise but on certain angles the light source is quite visible, ive been pulled over 3 times for it and been let off every time, just play nice and hope it all goes well
P.S under car neons can be any colour, as stated above

The official wording is that they are illegal if they flash or can be made to flash.
They would probably check this if you are going for the permit.

A bit old, but is the law the same in NSW?
ie can be on whilst driving but cannot change colour/brightness? And must be hidden?

HA!
i'm a vic boy...and i think this is the main reason i got off,
i almost got done in manly.
i was parked (in a car park!), the car was off, no passengers, and the keys weren't in the ignition.
i had my underbodies on, (48" front/rear, 48" sides + 24" behind rear wheels), and the cops said that they'd have to defect me for every single light individually. if the car wasn't made with it, then it's illegal.
i argued/debated with the guy asking about private parking and being off-street etc, and he just kept saying that if it wasn't there when the car was made then it was illegal. (i was tempted to say something about his lights...but didn't

)
so yeh...cops suck..but at least the let me off completely, without even checking my rego, or license. jusst turn them off, and get out of here lol.
yes officer, bye officer!

Riley.
Feb 23 2007, 08:48 AM
yes im quite sure that in every state other than WA they are illegal whilst driving
for the other states i think they would be akin to in car screens in the sense that you cannot have them on while the car is on

i wasn't driving tho!
it was parked...and that pissed me off.
but either way, copper told me that it's all illegal.

Depends though, are you sure it was private carpark? Even so, they can say they saw you driving on the road before and then you pulled into the car park, that means they can search your car...
Similar thing happened to me at school, our cars were parked in the carpark. What happened is one of my mates was leaving school at lunch, he's car was parked in the street, and when he left he noticed a cop behind him so my mate quicky turned into our carpark (he didnt so anything wrong so he didnt think the cop would follow him). Anyway the cops were detectives and turned the WHOLE carpark into like a freaken crime scene. They got the owners of all the other cars to present their license's and open their cars pop their bonnets ran checks on all the cars bla bla bla. My mate ended up getting defected for bold tyres lol. Oh and the teacher was screaming at the cop and he just screamed back saying the other guy drove off the street into the carpark so now they can do what they want to every car and threatened to defect every car in the carpark.

drop an email to the department of transport for your state for the most up to date answer, and the most correct answer.
the law in QLD on additional lighting for cars is ~20 years old!

Mate as far as I know, red and blue lights, wheather it be neons or led type is not legal and you can get fined for it since they are emergency colours and also the cops can pin you for impersonating a cop car as well.\
Any other colours besides those ones you can have in your car and turn it on only when parked and not driving.
I have blue neons inside the drivers and passengers dash and have chrome "steel" mats which reflect the lights a lot and people have told me that they had mistaken me for a cop with blue lights on inside the car, lucky I have a switch that I can use it whenever I want and if I see a cop car, can turn it off so if he turns around and pulls me over, he could just assumed there was light reflections when was passing me by.
Yes, put a separate switch so you can turn it off .
Good luck and try to be calm since it is only your hobby and you are not doing any harm to anyone regardless of what the cops think of them light.

i agree mate. it's really not that distracting as it is. i've seen cars with them on..and it's just like ooo pretty. and that's about it.
headlights from cars travelling in the opposite direction are more distracting imo.

its a prevention. if you look at them and go "oo pretty" for too long, your focus will change and you may veer into oncoming traffic.
its like the law that says you have to wear a bicycle helmet or you get fined, its a preventative measure to reduce the risk of serious injury.

When I put mine on years ago, burnt the midnight oil many nights gathering research into the laws in Tassie.
From my research I found that I could have extra lights if they were white at the front, red at the back and orange at the sides and didn't exceed whatever wattage.
Okay, so they weren't the greatest colours, but it would have been cool to be able to drive with them on.
However, I rang the head guy of the Tasmanian Traffic Authority (top bloke to talk to) and spoke at length about it just to be sure.
He basically said that despite what's in the ADR's etc., if a cop sees it, they'll fine me for *something, can't remember* and they'll win if I try to dispute it.
I even asked if I could have them hooked up to my alarm, but he said that would get me into trouble too.
So I just went ahead and bought whatever colours, flashyness, bla bla bla and used them for a toy until I got bored and took them off.
Figure out exactly what YOU want to do, YOU write down a list of questions, YOU ring the Traffic Authority and get the answers YOU want. If possible, get it in writing (an e-mail at least, like I did) but at least get the name and position of the person you spoke to.
I think that posting up what you think the rules are for your state just leads to confusion, and ultimately someone gets into trouble
Asking a local cop doesn't cut it either, as i've had several different responses.
I had exactly the same trouble when I put my 17" rims onto my car (14" standard). Soooooo many different opinions locally and online, until I rang the right people and got the real story.
