Hey all.
Just got these installed on sat..Time permitting I'll post some pics.

Got them installed in the factory locations of the VZ. In the process of wearing them in with a variety of music.
At the moment just an Alpine line level convertor is being used which will be replaced with the LC6 this week.

Initial impressions-
1. These things kick like a mule with dynamat in the doors. It actually refreshing to hear a system sound good without the use of a sub. It makes it far less fatiguing to listen to.

2. Highs are very accurate and doesn't scream in your ears like the MBs do. Bearing in mind I've had the MBs mounted on the pillars and up high on the dash near the window on previous cars.

3. Poor old T502 doesn't know what hit it. This thing is getting way hot now. The splits really eat up the power. T502 puts out around ~100wrms x 2 according to its birth sheet.

4. Doesn't like heaps and heaps of really low bass. Could be an amp issue but some heavy r&b or drum and bass will push them to the limit. Could require more wearing in though. Not that I'd expect the woofer to do the same job a sub is really meant to do..

5. They just keep sounding better and better every time i switch it on. Highly rececommeded for those not wanting to run a sub and want the best sounding all rounders. Focal K2p compare for accuracy in my opinion but are left for dead for bass like kick drums.

You won't be disappointed in these. Very happy thus far with these splits.

Adding the Audiocontrol LC6 will make a big difference also.

just out of interest
i listened to the hertz mille splits on the board at westside
it had bugger all midbass, then listened to the focal K2s and again not much midbass
focal polyglass V3s however had massive midbass (which i like)
and the sales man himself said they would suit my listening tastes.
which they did compared to the other 2 sets.
i highly doubt he'd steer me towards the cheapest of the lot, unless of course he makes more money off them (unlikely)

please note im only commenting on the midbass area.
they all sounded pretty good and accurate, just the V3's had some real balls in the midbass department

Which Westside did you hear them at? I didnt think any of them had the 165V3's on any of the boards. only the V2's

I havent heard them in direct comparison to each other on the board but if comparing them to the 165V2's the Mille splits have way more midbass while the Focals had quite a bit more midrange.

Glad to read your view on the new MLK-165.

I must say we have not as yet had a single negative feed back from anyone who has heard and played with them, most people seem to love them.

The new Mille Subs are a great match for them.
Dual Mono
RMA how would you describe the differnce between the MLK165 and something like the MLK3's, is there even more midbass and how much of a difference does the ribbon mid/tweeter make?
RMA
The MLK165 shares the same mid bass driver as the MLK2 & MLK3.

MLK165 uses a different tweeter, something developed specially for this speaker range, the crossover is a pretty funky looking beast too, not as full on as the MLK 2 & 3 but way beyond the HSK and SPACE ranges.
Bi Amp capable and lots of other funky stuff.

The ribbon mids in the MLK3 are great but I feel there will be very limited cars that will run them due mainly to their size and the problems accommodating the driver.

In short the MLK2 are still better than the MLK165, better crossover, and better tweeter but remember all at a better price too.
Dual Mono
With the ribbon mids roughly how deep are they and are they a sealed back ( like a tweeter ) or is it designed to be installed in the door or some form of enclosure? if so how large an enclosure.
Shreknos
intersting that they use the same midbass driver, good tactics i say,

you say limitations to the driver phil, what do you mean???

and, what is the off axis responce like on the ribbons??
RMA
The ribbon mids are not deep, around 1 cm from front to back but about 6 cm wide and 18 cm long.
You could install them in the pillar or door or even the kick trim if there was room.

The limitations I refer to is the sheer size, in custom installs no problems what so ever, in a factory location install it would be hard.

Off axis and on axis response is excellent.

They are great speakers, just a bugger of a size.

Sweet!!!

I will have to put them on my short list for my new front stage, I really like the midbass of the MLK165's but want a little bit more from the top end and I plan to rebuild my doors/kicks

Phil, are you sure this is correct?

Here we see a picture of the Hertz MLK165:

And here we see the Hertz ML1600 as used in the Mille 2 and 3-way systems...

Different magnets/motor structures to me...
Not to mention, the tech specs are different... and both drivers are listed too....

sorry you are right i heard the V2's which had more midbass hands down than the K2s and the hertz
but i got quotes on V3s which he said would be fairly similar in the midbass department...
11", 5" and tweeter(270V3) im sure the 11" would easily outperform the 6" in the midbass department biggrin.gif

Have had a listen to all the splits in Westside. I really was a fan of the V2s, especially due to their price I thought they were awesome. However the Milles have won me over since, I really grew attached to their smooth sound. smile.gif

yer it was at cannington, not sure if they are the new series or not...
Kuta
yeah definitely the new series. Talked to the guy there last week in cannington and he said he was trying to get more in cause everyone was picking em up. I'm not sure if they run out yet .... He compared them to dyn's and said they had a warm sound, not as in your face as the focal k2p.
TRD1JeeZy
they were definately not as bright as the focal, but i dont think theyre as good IMO as dyn's either. have been listening to dyns for the last few nights driving my bro's car while mines in the shop....

I just bought the new 242gt's can't wait to get them installed in my car!! decided to take it back a notch from my piercing mb quart's. smile.gif
RMA
Sorry folks I stand corrected on the MLK165 v MLK2 midbass driver issue.

I had ask the question of my area manager in the US and he must have miss heard what I said because he told me they were the same and the are not.

Still... one hell of a speaker though.
StormSQ
Just got the LC6 installed.

Much less distortion and an even better mid bass kick. Only the absolute heaviest of bass..dnb mainly, will bring them down.

Highly recommended combination. Now to find some decent recordings to play!

What to add next? Going for some good SQ...
RMA
Trits, there is always the new Mille subs and I do believe that if you ask Dave at Cannington nicely he will show you a HV Venti THESIS they now have on display.
StormSQ
I'm keen on the Mille subs and have been talking to Dave..
Mounting depth and size are really the biggest issue with the ute.

Dave has shown me the HV biggrin.gif Very very nice..

Im really keen on the MLK3's as well.

Ive got a HXD2 already but I was thinking about still using the passive crossovers, Tri-amping them and using the HXD2 to just to fine tune a bit.

I will be keen to hear what you think (if you do get the Ribbon midrange) about what a difference it made compared to the MLK2's.
StormSQ
Let me know what u think about the Mille sub..

BTW, the 12" Mille is here every saturday for auditioning incar if anyone is interested.smile.gif

Ok guys, i have a dilemma.

I am currently looking at purchasing a set of Focal 165KP's for my next car (that i will buy when the right one comes up) and now these MLK165's are out and the price is not that different. I have heard the Focals on a sound board, but as far as i know no one in Canberra stocks Hertz so i cannot audition them, but i do like a bit of midbass so would i be right in thinking the hertz would be better? (i have a set of hsk165s in my current car, and they are decent)

so guys what do you think?

Sorry champ, HSK's are in my current car that i am selling (the new speakers will be for my new car), and i could not be bothered taking them out and replacing with a cheaper speaker, so they are being sold with the car.

anyone got any opinions on my dilema above?

i heard them both on a board.. as stated in earlier post both the K2 and Mille lacked midbass... the focal V2's however had massive midbass.
but trits has stated they(hertz) have good midbass, so incar maybe the enclosure (door) helps in that aspect, but i assume the K2's and V2's would also benefit in that regards too...
personally i prefer the focals over the hertz, and dynaudio over both...

but really you gotta get out and try to audition them yourself...your ears arent the same as anyone elses so what might sound good to me might be total crap to you...
chops
yeah i understand that, unfortunetly not one car audio place in canberra stocks hertz, so its hard to audition them.

call up Westside car audio, in cannington, perth...ask them to put the phone up to the sound board biggrin.gif

or hopefully you can find someone with them installed in a car to give you a demo...

We hope to address this problem this year.
StormSQ
Sound proofing the doors of course improved the midbass. I definately can't say its lacking!
Both are excellent speakers, but like the man said, audition, audition, audition!

Also consider whether you'll be running a sub? Does it crossover with the splits? I found the Milles started conflicting with the sub running on the board so obviously it would need the filters retuned.
chops
well i will be deadening the doors when the speakers are getting installed, and there will be a 12' sub in the system running off a 3-400 watt monoblock. (the splits will run off a 2 channel amp, not sure which one at this stage, probably 75 - 100wrms per channel)

And it would be great if somewhere in Canberra sold Hertz, unfortunetly it will be too late for me as i want to make my decision in the next day or two.

Cheers people.
RMA
Sorry Chops I know its a pain when you hear someone say something and you want to check it out yourself but there is no one local.

But I am sure that there are plenty of other fine brands to choose from in the ACT.
chops
Yeah its all good i purchased a set of the Focal 165KPs
RMA
I am sure you will be more than happy with what you got.

Are you sure they didn't have the amp hi passed?
I heard these things at Westside in Cannington a couple of days back and they were "brutal" for lack of a better word.
I have found alot of stores that will run speakers on HP when demoing with a sub and sometimes forget to switch it back when demoing the speakers on there own
TRD1JeeZy
he just switched the speakers so they were all running off the same source/amp on the switchboard setup...

did you listen to the focal V2s and K2s when you heard the milles? i heard them all with and without sub... V2's almost didnt need the sub they were hammering... i honestly wanna listen to anyone who has a set of these in a well deadened door either V2s or V3s cos the midbass was exceptional. the higher end wasnt too shabby either...but thats where the milles and K2s strutted their stuff.

what about the elate 6's? they're in the same price range as the MLK 165's (a bit cheaper actually).

a few ppl have compared the 165's against the focal v2. interested to see any comments regarding the elate vs mlk considering the elates used to be around 1.8g rrp, now they're $675

The Elates are still $1882 RRP (Factory suggested) but sold for $675 here.

They are very different speakers in many ways whilst both are excellent in their own ways.

A little bit like comparing Morel Focal & Dyn - all good, all different, speakers really are a personal choice.
RiZLa
I work in a car audio shop here in Norway, and have much experience with the speakers mentioned here...
And i find the information that people have written here gives a little misinformation...

Regarding the sound quality, the MLK165's after my opinion is a step ahead of the 165K2P. Gives more dynamic and a more natural and neutral midrange and a more detailed and smooth tweeter.

Regarding the midbass output, the opinions here is somewhat right, but somehow also wrong..
I actually did a test on this now, using a song which had really demanding midbass recording.
At the same volume at the headunit, the 165v2s had somewhat more midbass output, but alot more undefined and dynamic. BUT, when i cranked the volume a couple of notches up, the V2's gave up, and MLK165's never stopped.. They had actually had a lot more output then the 165v2's midbass wise..! The MLK's also had a more defined and deeper midbass output, the 165v2's were a bit too "thin".
TWO DIFFERENT LEAGUES!

Sound quality wise the 165v2 isn't in the same league as the MLK's.. I compare the 165v2's to the Hertz HSK165, and actually find the HSK to be better in some recordings, and the V2's to be better in others...
It actually comes down to what YOU prefer.

The amplifier used in this test was a Audison LRx 4.5 and the headunit was a Pioneer DEH-P88RS

After my opinion, the MLK's is a real "catch".. I have been through seas, morel, focal etc, and in my opinion these hertz MLK165's are the best in the price range... Looking forward to get my Mille MLK2 and ML3000 ready in my car smile.gif

BTW, the MLK165's didn't shine "out of the box", so it can be a possibility that the MLK's you guys have heard wore relatively fresh from the box?
My demo set have played several days in a row....
StormSQ
Sounds like a great testimony there smile.gif

They are sounding better and better all the time in my install..

i had them installed last nite, initial inpressions, they are a very accurate speaker but they lack mid bass (yet to be run in) compared to the spx 177r, type x's have amazing midbase IMO

U are talking about the Morels? I have experience with the Hybrid Ovation 6 and found it very warm and pleasing to listen to, but i think it lacked midbass and dynamics.. It is very kind with bad recordings, that is a plus in my book.
RMA
Morel recommend 30 to 40 hours playing time before the drivers are considered run in.
Damo95
i felt that my old elate 6's shat all over the MW160's for midbass..
mind you.. the elates were fed 250wrms each and run active, whereas the dyn are running off 125wrms and thru custom passive..

i'd be keen to hear the hertz..
