just wondering in terms of sq and tuning features would it be worth splashing out and spending a few grand for a dvd/cd with screen or less than a grand on just a high end single disc cd player???? Do many high end sq systems have multimedia centres as their source???

Depends, i personally don't like any multimedia, just plain 2 way and a sub.
Few grands on HU + procesor is plenty

Guys, I'm curious on this too as I have a JVC KD-AV7008 multimedia HU and i'm thinking of moving slowly to SQ.
I love the flexibility of the Ipod controller in whilst keeping the AV option of in car movies.
But in terms of SQ will this HU cut it?

Ive had a TV (or screen) with multimedia control.
Switched over to a pure SQ head unit and havent looked back. Cant compare really.

Depends what your budget is, but generally speaking a dedicated single DIN SQ headunit will offer better SQ than a motorised screen/AV thingo.
An exception would be Alpines IVA-D310 , a shedload of CAASQ competitors use this deck with excellent results.
If you can live without DVD, its much more economical to purchase a dedicated SQ headunit because they generally include an EQ, time alignment, Xover ajustment and the et cetera. You can add this to an A/V screen but thats when it starts getting expensive.
Ian's recommended SQ headunits
Eclipse CD7000
Alpine 9855R
Alpine 9061 + H701 processor add on (about $1800 for the 2)
Higher range Pioneer gear maybe?
Wouldnt use JVC, Kenwood or Sony - they cant match Alpine/Eclipse for detail and imaging.

With all the deals that are on at the moment, i would sriously consider buying either the d100 or the w200 and then just adding the Phx-701 processor unit. This would give you all the features you could possibly need.
With a little haggling and an eye on whatever specials are on at prospective stores, you could pick up the pair for as little as $2200. I dont think there's anything else out there that would come close to a combination like that for the small amount of dollars.
Get in touch with Adam at Alberts in Cannington. Rumour has it, he knows what he's talking about.
