Full Version: How small is too small?

Hey there I'm finally up to building my fibreglass enclosure, i don't have too much room to work with i'm trying to get it in the back right corner of the boot just behind the wheel well. Then i realised my boot has stupid massive hinges that get in the way a bit.

I got the 306C and the manual recons 1.25 cubic feet / 34.5L which seems fricken massive to be even for some ready built enclosures.

How small can i go? unfortunately this is what i have so far, which is stupid really coz i've noticed how much more room i actually have...

Havent decided on the height or angle of the sub yet...
(beginning to wish i got the 256C (10") lol)

How much does size really matter?
trism
yes...it really does matter. to small, and teh sub will sound like ass.

that size is pretty much average for most subs. dont be surprised.

the 306cs actually suit a 2.2Cube box, ported, tuned to 30-35Hz

If i can't hit the recommended what should i go?

Spose i'll scrap this design.. off to bunnings, again.

What car is this going into.. and can you take a pic of the boot. If it recommends 34 litres as the box size then I wouldnt go any smaller. You've got 2 options, build a bigger box or buy a sub that can work in a smaller box. There are lots of subs (especially 10's) that can work quite well in 20 litre boxes. Look at Boston subs.

That base you have cutout looks way too small. if you made it like that, depending on the shape, you'd be lucky to get 20 litres.

The manual just says "sealed enclosures 1.25 cubic ft or 35.4L recommended"

I've already bought the 306C, i'm not gonna pull money out of my bum to pay for something else, it's my fault for not researching i assumed i'd be able to acheive it (noobie)

Heres where i plan on putting it -

in that corner..

1992 Mazda 626 sedan.

and i can assure you from personal experience, that it sounds much better, lower, and louder,in a 2.2 cubic foot box, tuned to 30-35Hz. do a search for 306C if you dont beleive me.

Well the quick answer it that it will fit in that corner, but it may come out a fair way... (more than you intended?). The boot has a pretty square lining so it shouldnt be too hard to work out approx how far out the box will need to come out. Bearing in mind that you'll have to make sure to miss the boot hinge.

Take some rough measurements of the height and width of the area of boot that you want to use. Then the 3rd measurement will be the depth and that will be the variable determined by the box size.

Eg. if you need 1.25 cu/ft and the width of boot area is 30cms and height is also 30cms then the box will need to be 37cms deep. In other words it will come out 37cms from the sidewall of the boot. Of course this is all pretty rough.. but you get the idea smile.gif

Post up some rough measurements of the boot area.

gday - just wondering why you dont want it under the parcel shelf? Be a lot easier lol - but if you are good with fiberglass you would be really surprised how well you could make a enclosure in that corner look.

I wanna keep majority of the boot space, and this is my first time with fibreglass.

What do you think the minimum volume i should go for, i notice theres a sealed box version of the 306C.. and its only 28L!?

I think i'd be better off going for a sealed enclosure, i'm a hell noob and not much of a handy man so porting might make it even more confusing and frustrating for me lol
kiwi
Sealed is easier especially if you try making a fibreglass one. You really should have a go at the fibreglass.. it really is a piece of pi$$ to do, so dont be put off. Will cost maybe $150 and a couple of days to do the whole thing.

There are some good tutes on here to show you step by step how to do it, so have a think. I had no experience before I made one and I'm pretty happy with how mine turned out. Mind you... having a dad who has built a few boats in his time did help smile.gif

Fair enough you want to save as much room as possible, but i honestly dont thinks it'll be worth the time, effort and money if your gonna design and construct an enclosure thats too small and the end result it sounding like bum.
Cant you take the woofer you have back or sell it maybe, the 306 is pretty popular so it shouldn't be hard. Or you can make the enclosure a bit bigger.

Just my 2c
kiwi
I agree with gonebust, you dont want to compromise now, othewise you'll just have to do it all over again in the future. Sooo you could either sell the sub and buy one that suits a smaller box OR make the box bigger so that it suits the sub, and live with the reduced boot space smile.gif

Just for interest.. you're after at a box size of 35 litres for your 306.. whereas my 10inch sub works in a box size between 12 and 19 litres smile.gif

i'm just going to make the enclosure bigger, i still have a fair bit of space to play with, i'm still going for that corner but bringing it as far out as i can toward the spare tyre, and as lengthy as possibly, if i wanna make it bigger the dimensions/shape i'm working with it will be perfectly suited to behind the left+center seat.

Like i think i mentioned Pioneer made an enclosure specially designed for the 306C and its only 28L so based on the shape i'm hoping to hit minimum 30L and as close to the recommended 35.4 as possible. smile.gif

And yeah i think i'm going to have a lot of fun with the fibreglass wink.gif

Hey a little off topic, but here's a link to my almost done box. My reason for sharing it is that you may want to figure out your whole FG method all the way through before getting 70% complete and realizing you didn't plan out how to put a top on the box like me. Good luck with the glassing!
